With no plate it obviously pours in as much fuel as the pump is capable of with its current configuration of DVs/plungers/barrels/cam. 'pouring coal' is just partially burnt fuel coming out the exhaust that is easily achieved with a plate still installed.

The plate only controls rack travel ie: the amount of fuel allowed during full load, it does not control low end fueling. The following cutaway diagram is useful to see how all of the components come together. The black arrow is the rack adjustment, the red arrow is the governor arm adjustment, and the green arrow is the AFC pre-load adjustment.

I dont want to sound stupid..(Im fairly new to the diesel performance stuff,) but what does removing the fuel plate do to the engines performance and what do you mean by grinding it?

Removing material from the face of the fuel plate adds allowable rack travel, extended rack travel allows greater lift to port closure increasing flow from the injection pump.

Hey man, how about another one of these, THIS time, explaining timing, its effects with different pumps, (160/170/215, etc), cylinder pressures etc.... seems to be more info that needs to be shared properly.

Heres a nice little chart from dodgeram.org, definately doesnt explain everything but give a general idea of what goes on and what to expect.

I'm locking this thread, simply to keep it from getting too long for anyone to read through. For specific questions PM Don Wagner, otherwise start a new thread.
Thanks guys, and especially Don Wagner, for the info.
