1997 Dodge 2500 8th letter in VIN help

I have a 1997 dodge 2500 cummins diesel. From what I have read the 8th digit in the VIN should be C for diesel but my 8th digit in the VIN is D. Can anyone give me any information why mine is not C?

from what I understand 6 is for the 24 valve and C is supposed to be for the 12 valve

Based on the VIN Code readouts, for 1994-97, 8th digit should be "C" for 5.9 12v Cummins. For 1998+, 8th digit should be a "D" for 5.9 12v Cummins.

8th Engine (1994-1997)
5 5.9L 8cyl MPI-HDC
C 5.9L 6cyl Diesel
G 2.5L 4cyl
T 5.2L 8cyl CNG
W 8.0L 10cyl
X 3.9L 6cyl MPI
Y 5.2L 8cyl MPI
Z 5.9L 8cyl MPI-LDC

8th Engine (1998+)
3 3.0 Liter V6 MPI
5 5.9 Liter V8 MPI (HD)
6 5.9 Liter I6 24 Valve Diesel
7 5.9 Liter I6 24 Valve HO Diesel (2001)
D 5.9 Liter I6 Diesel
R 2.5 Liter I4 MPI
P 3.3 Liter V6 MPI
W 8.0 Liter V10 MPI
X 3.9 Liter V6 MPI
Y 5.2 Liter V8 MPI
Z 5.9 Liter V8 MPI (LD)

Also, check the 10th digit for model year, see below:

10th Model Year
R 1994
S 1995
T 1996
V 1997
W 1998
X 1999
Y 2000
1 2001
2 2002
etc -------
A 2010

Sounds like your truck is a 98 not a 97!

Plug your vin number in the site below.

Comprehensive Chevrolet, Saturn, GMC, Hummer, Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Geo, Dodge, Plymouth, Jeep, Chrysler, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda Truck, Mercedes VIN Decoder

That will show you what your truck came with. I think the d is what you want for diesel.

the 10th number is is V for 1997. I plugged my VIN into the website you gave me and it says that the truck was built in june of 1997. Came back as :

Dodge Ram Chassis Cab/Ram Pickup (4x4) (Dodge Ram Pick-up "2500")
Vehicle equipped with: ETB 5.9L I6 Cummins Turbo Diesel / DGP 4-Spd. Automatic 47RE Transmission
Built: June 10, 1997

I guess it means its a 1997! lol. Does anyone know what the ETB stands for? Thanks guys for all your help!
