Run the tank down a little then lay on your back and kick the tank or hit it with a heavy mallet.
If it fixes it avoid filling your tank to the brim in the future.
Dodge recommends no more than two automatic fuel station nozzle shut offs.

That worked for my '99, was wondering why my fuel economy was looking good for a tank while traveling. Hit it with a rubber mallet and the gauge fell immediately.

So it broke loose took your guys adive and my dads buddies advice with beating the side of the tank and sure enough it did! so i guess i should only fill it to 3/4 full?

You should be fine filling it up, it only happened once on my 99, never had a problem for years after that. There's no fixing the one on my 96, I'm removing the bed and replacing it.

I just fill mine till the nozzle automatically shuts off, it's more than 3/4 but not full to the brim.
If I took the time to baby the fuel in to fill it all the way doubt it would take more than five more gallons.

Darn, it's probably worn or damaged towards the top. You probably already know your options. If you do end up replacing it and don't want to drop the tank you an cut a hole in the bed and then either weld the piece back on or screw it back down and use silicon to seal the hole, that's the lazy way I used on a rusty s10.
