Oil Pressure Problems...Help

Just my luck, i went and pickup up a 98 12 valve last night. Drove it 2 hours home, no problem, get home and drove it to work today, coming home i hear the ding ding like my doors open, look down and the check gauge light is on and the oil pressure gauge is sunk down to 0. Seems to happen when im decellerating on coming to a stop. Any help would be appreciated, just sucks spending all the money on something that know im afraid to even run. (don't really have much to fix it)

Sending unit??
Pull pan and clean screen??
Clean/Replace pickup tube
Check over pressure bypass valve??

Just a few things ive heard to do.. but they were more on gas motors, if anyone could help i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Nathan

First thing to do is to go get yourself an elcheapo mechanical oil pressure gauge and verify the pressure. There is a 1/8" port on top of the oil filter housing you can use. If pressure is good, then sender is bad. Get yourself a new Cummins sensor. If oil pressure is low, then time to start tearing her down to find the problem.

Common intermittent problem, always sender related.

Thank You, Thank You, one and all. And a special thanks to RPegram for the tip on the 1/8 access on top of the oil filter.
I bought this truck new in 1995. It is a 1996 with a 5 speed manual. I started it last week and the motor sound was fine, but the oil pressure gauge was at 0. At 1700 rpm the gauge shot up to 40 psi.
I shut it down and started searching the repair manual. I changed the oil and filter first and had the same results.
I found this site and your input and I bought (as suggested ) an elcheapo manual gauge and accessed the 1/8 port on top of the oil filter and got a steady 50 psi reading. So I will order a cummins sender. Thank you all again.

If you are sure its the sending unit. It won't hurt to run it as long as the check engine chime dosen't drive you crazy. I drove mine for over a year with the same issue. It got more frequent over time and I couldn't stand it any more.

as long as you have at least 10psi per 1000rpm your good to go. Running it with a dead sending unit is not going to hurt anything, just be annoying to have the oil light on all the time!

It seems there is a known problem with '98 12 V engines. The first time it happened to me, I . The truck still runs fine. The problem is the sender/ gauge cant read low pressure, enough to make the "ding , ding" go off. The only real fix is to reflash your ECM to read idiot speak " more than 5 psi" or put a live OPG in the cab, or just live with it. Do a search on this.
