I am good at wiring and have wired many things up on atv's but now i want lights on my truck and i need to make sure i do everything right. I will be using relays which i haven't used before and don't really understand the little diagram on the front of the relays so i need some help. First, that relay is more then you need. Depending on the lights you're talking I guess. Can't tell for sure without the pin diagram too, but a relay is pretty basic. You have power (straight from the battery) coming in to one pin. Then you have that power going out from a pin (usually across from the other one?) to your lights. You then have a pin for a switch... if there's power to that pin the relay closes the circuit inside, if there's no power (ie switch on or off) the relay opens the circuit. Some 4pole relays use the 4th pin as a normally closed shutoff (meaning, fog lights... if you turn the brights on it turns off the fogs). The 5pole you have would be a similar set-up... the top of the relay should say what it all does... but you're basic 3 is all you need I'm thinking. Power in, normally open switched, and a power out.

Pins 85 and 86 is for the control circuit. The switch usually hooks up to 86 and 85 goes to ground. But it can be reversed. It is not polarity sensitive. Pins 30 and 87 are the power pins that turn the lights on. Power goes to pin 30 and 87 goes to the lights. Here is a schematic that will help. Here |

For the switches it really won't matter. I'd honestly use whatever I have around, it's very, very low amperage going through the switch... just enough to power the relay. Someone else might have a better idea, 22 might be too small, 18 should be fine I'm thinking.
