Power steering

My power steering stops working to the right when trying to park or manuever in a tight spot. can turn the wheel to the left and it turns fine, try to turn to the right and Im thinking superman couldnt get it to turn. soon as you get it rolling forward or backward its fine. now that I think about it, it is a little hard to turn both directions when going fairly slow, like turning into a parking. Do I need a pump? box? something cheaper?????

If it is harder to turn in one direction over the other, I believe you answered your own question. Pump would make it equally hard in both directions and cause hard brake pedal.

My brake pedal is pretty hard to push down. How does the brake pedal tie into the power steering pump? This is the first diesel I have owned so not familiar at all. Thanks for the help.

You have hydraboost brakes. The fluid from the power steering pump gives you power steering and power brakes. If pump is weak, then steering and braking will be hard. Normally with a bad pump steering is hard no matter which direction you turn. It could be you notice it more in one direction. Can you hear any kind of whine from pump? If both steering and braking are hard or have become more difficult recently, then chances are the pump is bad. You can get one locally or Rockauto.com for around $75.

ah ok, makes sense. yes it gets hard to turn either direction when slowing down, like turning into the driveway or something. no whine from the pump though. it just refuses to be turned to the right when its not moving. I am going to check the fluid level in the pump.

I had the same trouble with mine, it was a leaking hose that led to low fluid level....I fixed the oil level and it fixed the problem
