I use a 12 point 1/4" drive socket (I think it's 1/8th inch)

The socket will not quite fit down over the round head of the break-off screw. Then I install the appropriate length 1/4" drive extension to the socket and use an impact driver. The driver will drive the socket down over top/onto the round head of the screw. Then I turn it out with the driver. The screw will be driven up and into the end of said socket.

I use hex head screw to replace the break-off screws. I have also found that I cannot remove a srew with out an impact driver. They are all too tight to use a screw driver. The instructions say to use an inpact driver to tighten the screws anyway.
