99 Cummins Transmission problems... HELP!
5.9 with automatic transmission... The truck doesn't want to shift out of first... wraps up very high, but as soon as I let off the gas, it will shift. Shifts fine through the rest of the gears, it just doesn't want to go from first to second. In reading on this forum it sounds like it may be the VSS on the transmission? Does anyone have a part number? I'd like to change that out tomorrow, as I'm supposed to take a road trip Wednesday. Thanks!

if im thinking right, the 1st to 2nd shift is done mechanically via line pressure. check your throttle valve adjustment. 3 to 4 to od is done electronically. this is based on my adventures with this tranny. there are some solenoids inside but one em makes a quick first to second shift right after truck moves when it goes bad. the truck also experiences limp mode when a solenoid fails. i heard of check ball in the tranny cooler line limiting pressure also but i dont know if that applies to your year. do a search on throttle valve adjustment and tranny line check ball in this forum to see if anyone else smarter than me can help.

Id check the speed sensor in the overdrive unit. Easy to change, about 20 bucks at autozone and it made my truck not want to shift. It may or may not b the problem but its an easy thing to check first. Good luck

Well it was worth a shot. My truck didnt want to shift from first to second at full throttle, but if i only pushed it 3/4 throttle it would shift fine. Got a little better with the throttle cable ajustment, i think my transgo kit solved this by grinding the stem that goes into the vb. shifts a lot better now. good luck man
