Burning

This Has happened to me before not my diesel though, when your gauges start acting up its usally a sign of a bad ground so check your ground and if there good i could not tell you where to go from there.

My truck did some what of the same thing but with out the burning smell i put two new batteris in it and checked all of the connections on the alternator and started and cables before i put batts in but ended up put new ones in anyway. The truck ran fine for about a week just like your and then it started buzzin at me and the check guages light came on, it ended up bein a loose connector that plugged into the alternator. not say thats what yours did but check all the connections and wires for bare spots.

Make sure the bat wire going to the starter isn't rubbing anything and you haven't shorted anything down at the starter. There's a heat shield on that isn't there? I don't remember. Make sure that isn't bent and touching the battery cable.

I assume it kept running?

I have to ask this, has anyone been recently fooling around with the wiring under the dash? Radio, extra lights. . . .

Besides for the volt meter, what else isn't working?

i havent touched anything under the dash except for my quad commander and fuel pressure gauge, but that was about 2 months ago. and the only gauge that went dead was the battery gauge. i didnt check the cable going to the starter good because the truck would run back when i had the old batteries in it, then when i put the new batteries in the truck started acting up.

check those connections again. Especially the positive cross over wire. That alternator is a 100 amp. It might be trying to charge the 2nd battery unsuccessfully.

You better gat a volt meter on that and make sure it's charging

i bet you blew the altenator fuse i think its a 140 amp located in the box under the hood check it out and let me know. my truck did the same as yours and after lots of swearing i finally figured out that it was a $5 fuse after spending $200 onbatteries and altenators
