intermittent shift problem

My truck once when merging on the freeway would not shift into overdrive. I got off the freeway and from then on out it hasn't done that before. For the past three weeks, every once in a while it can't make up its mind for the 2-3 and 3-4 shift and intermittently slips in and out of those gears real quick. The truck only has 83K miles. Is it likely there is something wrong with the transmission or could it be a torque converter lock-up issue I have heard about before on here that has to do with wiring or something like that.

sounds like its time from a trans rebuilt an valve body, might aswell do a torque converter while your in there. for the original issue, you sure you didnt have overdrive turned off?

I know OD was on when the first problem occured. I know these transmissions aren't the best, but slipping at 83K is horrible. I am hoping the transmission isn't going bad already. Could it be a wiring problem.

it could be a numerous amount of things from a wire all the way down to od going out again, do the key cycle trick and see if you have any codes that didnt trip the check engine light... but may be even the torque converter no locking and unlocking properly, theres just so many things to consider with an automatic tranny.....

Don't jump on the bad trans bandwagon too quickly.
If your trans is locking and unlocking the converter, it most likely is electrical noise from the alternator.
First, clean all battery posts. Check grounds especially.
On my truck I found the passenger battery ground loose on the block!!!!!
I clean the grounds on the batteries 2 times a year.
I also have the electrical filter from DTT-Diesel Transmission Technology - DTT Performance Diesel Transmission and Power Accessories.
You can also try wrapping the big wire behind the alternator that goes over to the passenger battery with alluminum foil.
Now, if it is dropping out of OD, you will have another issue.
figure it out AFTER you clean those grounds.

i feel dumb, but the passenger side battery ground had come loose and had to have been like that for a while and I somehow never noticed. I'll keep ya'll updated if that was the issue.
