Exclamation Reimbursement for pickup use HELP!!!!

Not sure if this is considered urgent.

PLEASE HELP

I am trying to find out what is fair to me and my bosses. I now have 120,000 (hard farm miles) on my pickup and they have been paying for fuel. I am guessing 40,000 are personal miles. Within the last 6 months they started giving me a 300 dollar a month reimbursement. I still owe 19000 and at this rate it will be worn out by the time I get it payed off. They helped with some repairs also. They want to make my payments until the end of the year and then get me a work pickup. I would have to drive personal vehicle to the barn then get in work truck, which most guys around here let you drive it home in case you have to check a sprinkler in the middle of the night. Farms are at least 30 miles from home. PLEASE HELP

If you're getting $0.41 per mile you're getting screwed as much as most people are. Any less is an insult. Any more and you'll have to pay income tax on the differance.

The fuel to run the truck costs, say, $0.24/mi. The $0.41/mi thing is assuming you pay your own fuel.

If they're paying for fuel and giving you $300/month, and you are running 80K in two years, that's 40K/year, 3333 miles per month, or $1366 per month, minus $800 for fuel, equals $566. So you're getting $266 per month UNDER what you should be getting according to the IRS.

You're getting screwed. You should ask for AT LEAST $0.41 per mile and pay for your own fuel. You'll be getting more than you are now. And the $0.41 mile price is for little economy cars, a pickup truck is worth more IMHO.

I've had this discussion with my employer and co-workers many times. It's a sore subject. I think $0.60 per mile would be more fair, but....

Anothe thing is my employer refuses to consider a truck pulling a trailer as two separate vehicles EACH worth the per-mile reimbursement. So I refuse to haul stuff on my trailer for them. I just make four trips with the truck instead of one with the truck and gooseneck.

I refuse to use my personal vehicle for company use. They pay me the IRS rate and charge our clients more than the IRS rate and keep it. Total BS. Employers have the attitude today "What is mine is mine and what is yours is mine." What is next - my house?

My advice - have them provide a company truck. If they do and you take it home, then leave it until the next morning (do not take advantage of the situation). If you use your truck, then you have every right to ask what you think is appropriate. Be honest and do not hesitate to be assertative, since this affects you financially. 60 cents sounds appropriate as mentioned (well thought out) above.

Figured it up and should be aroung $18,000. Does the farm use miles count the same as other business miles

You should also examine your insurance policy. You may not be covered on your personal policy while you are enbaged in commercial use of your truck.

The $0.41 is an old number. It is now $0.585.

If they pay your fuel and repairs or give you a allowance you may need to contact your tax person for what can and can not be deducted, if you screw up and get audited you will have them in your business for years (it took me 5 years to get them out of my taxes after my wife screwed up on mileage)....As for mileage it is $.585 as of July 01 2008, prior was $.505 / mile.

Darn it, my employer has been pulling the wool over my eyes with the 41 cent a mile number. I found another web site that confirms the 58.5 cent figure:

IRS Announces 2008 Standard Mileage Rates; Rate for Business Miles Set at 50.5 Cents per Mile

Thanks guys, I'm gonna talk to my boss about this....
