It's not uncommon for the fuel sender to quit working and to run out of fuel on these trucks. This said, if you have fuel to the lift pump this may not be the case. If you have any tools you should disconnect the fuel line at the injection pump to make sure fuel is getting there. With a 19mm wrench you then need to crack the injector lines loose at the head to make sure the injection pump is delivering fuel. Also try swapping the fuel pump relay with the horn relay to see if that helps (they are the same), sometimes the relay just takes a dump.
You should post this in the 911 section for better exposure.

If you are still running the stock lift pump, just because it is running does not mean a thing, you need to check the inlet to the injection pump to make sure it is delivering fuel.

Yes, first test is to break the line loose as it enters the IP ( you can just follow the line from the filter to the pump), it's the one on the right hand side. Then bump the starter briefly and check to see if fuel is coming out of the line. The lift pump should only run about 30 seconds. If you have fuel there, you will then need to crack an injector line or two at the head and crank the engine to see if you have fuel there.

The noise is the pump running......but often the impeller comes loose on the shaft. The pump runs, but doesn't pump any fuel. HTH

Well after spending time on the phone with mishkaya who is a hell of a nice guy to take time out of his day to talk to me, I find that the lift pump is pumping and after breaking the fitting loose at the injectors, the VP looks like it is getting fuel, but still no start, I'm lost now. I ordered a pressure gauge from Gino's looks like I need one anyway
