Unhappy (HELP)Truck won't Run!!!

So, I thought I had a CP3 issue because truck stopped running. Leading up to it, the truck had high EGTs, extremely low power, and tons of black smoke. Well, it wasn't the CP3. I swapped a known good CP3 and FCA (Thanks Shane) in and I get the same thing.

Issues:
1.) Smoke at idle but not extremely rough!
2.) Poor throttle response
3.) High EGTs
4.) Tons of black smoke when driving
5.) Once coolant temp rises, truck is not drivable and stalls out

Checked:
1.) Fuel filters
2.) Swapped CP3 and FCA as a unit
3.) Changed walbro lift pump
4.) Checked boost boots
5.) No fuel in oil
6.) No oil in coolant
7.) No fuel leaks
8.) Checked injector tubes and lines

I can't think of anything else.
The injectors are a few months old. I would hope nothing is wrong in that department. Anyone have some ideas? I'M IN DESPERATE NEED OF SOME HELP

Bryan

Sounds like you might have a injector issue. I am having similar problems also..

An injector problem would not make me happy! This would be twice. Once with stock and now aftermarket. I overlooked the injectors because they were so new. It does make some sense that they could be over fueling. I'll have to try testing them tomorrow somehow.

Well this morning I disconnected each injector one at a time and got a noticeable difference in idle quality, tone, and smoke. This tells me that the injectors are doing what they are suppose to! Am I wrong in thinking that way?

I'm at a huge loss now. I have no clue what the issue could be. The weird thing is; it will idle fine with a bit of smoke until it reaches a certain temp and then smoke starts to roll, idle fluctuates until it eventually quits running. What in the heck could this be?
Anyone?

Do a compression check- sounds like burnt valves or a hole in a piston. Sorry to sound so scarry - but if your fuel system is working- and not overfueling- then your down to some serious oil burning. If the compression check is ok- then it's time to take a look at the turbo. That kind of smoke may be from starving for air and not over fueling too.

My truck was acting pretty similar. It was getting plenty of fuel volume but not enough pressure. We checked the return on the injectors and it was way too high. I ordered new injectors from Cummins and they should be reinstalled on Monday with my 90 hp ddp nozzles.

Talking Fixed!

Well, after sending my injectors out to get checked, they turned out to be A-ok. Thanks Gus!! I swapped rail pressure sensor and still did not have a fix. All my symptoms pointed to either electrical (ECM) or hardcore mechanical failure. Wasn't ready to assume the worst.

Did some internet investigation and came across several issues with lots of black smoke and no power, but nothing with idle issues at operating temps. Went with the gut and changed the boost pressure sensor, although everything I read and everyone I talked to said it would trip a code if bad or give abnormal boost readings. Nope, no code and boost was normal! Sensor fixed the issue and dealer got none of my cash; at least this time. Sure could have used their DRB though. Stupid sensors!

P.S. One thing I can say, I have become a Pro at injector removal and installation. LOL

What you can do to check codes is cycle the key 3 times. On the 3rd cycle, leave the key on and look in the odometer window and codes will show up.

Apparently misinterpreted. It is fixed! A little tidbit, the dash will not always display a code. I also have a smarty to read codes. It was checked and there were none. The DRB comment was so I could watch engine parameters while running to give me more of an idea of what was failing or had failed. Thanks BILLSO6, for those that didn't know the key trick.
