No fuel to injectors
I own a 2001 Cummins. I had the injector pump replaced about two years ago (50K miles) with a rebuilt one and a low fuel pressure sensor installed as well. About a year ago I found that if the engine was off more than about 5 hours the engine would not start unless I first bumped the motor and let the lift pump run for about 10 seconds. Once I did this the engine would start fine. It did not matter if it was hot or cold out. It would not start if I did not do this. The other day I noticed that the low fuel pressure wire was not connected to the sensor. Upon reconnection the light would come on when the accelerator pedal was more than halfway engaged, not good. I replaced the fuel filter which was not the cause. I replaced the lift pump and now I can not get the engine restarted. I loosened the banjo bolt feeding into the injector pump and fuel is being delivered there. I loosened two injectors on the head and can see no signs of fuel. I loosened two lines exiting the injector pump and can see some signs of air and fuel. Its hard to see myself because I can only see that area after the engine stops rotating. I have bumped and rotated this motor over to point I think I am going to run the batteries out (25+). Do I need to bleed something I am not aware of? Has my injector pump died? Appreciate any help, I really need to get my work truck running again. |

Sounds like a VP failure, but it seems odd that it would quit when you changed the LP. Might try loosening about 4 injectors at the head and cranking it over to see if it will push the air out. Have you got any codes?

You should still be able to check to see if there is any codes buy doing the key trick. From the off position turn to the on position back and forth 3 times than leav in the on position. It will desplay any codes in the odomiter screen. Good luck with getting your truck running.

The 0216 is not good. Indicates the VP44 is wearing out mechanically and at some point was unable to advance timing. On top of the symptom of not having any fuel at the lines, I'd say the rotor in the VP44 seized. 0230 is a lift pump code. Not surprising since you just replaced it. 0522 is an oil pressure sensor code. Probably just a transient code.

I hate to say, but if you were running a while with low fuel pressure the damage was already being done. Changing the lift pump and trying to start the truck to prime caused the VP to fail. When I prime, I only bump the key and then wait until I hear the pump stop before turning off and then bumping again. If you crank the engine then you are turning the VP while it is dry and that will burn out the rotor. I would suggest an Air Dog or FASS pump after you do the VP. They should get the VP to last longer (btw, I'm on my 3rd LP in 102k miles) Depending on the price and what you have for mods, the Hot-Rod VP-44 is an option.
