No turbo when cold

Hello everyone, I have a 2001 2500 quad cab with a 5 speed. I am not a tech but have some understanding of the workings of diesels. My truck will not kick in the turbo until it reaches about 155 or 160 degrees. After that it goes like a raped ape. When cold it will fall right on its face and barely run. Any suggestions?

probably a safety thing...the ford wrecker i drive can only go so fast till it reaches operating temps !!!

Where are you located? I'm an idiot, but is it possible your oil is gelling?

I don't know about the 01's, but i know one of the reprograms i had done to mine had a "turbo-saver" feature that was kicked on. It does exactly that now, the turbo is silent until it reaches whatever the parameter is and then once it's there, i got my air whistle back.

So it's probably normal, gotta let them warm up or they are rolling doorstops. Go easy on it when it's warming up, you don't want to wash the cylinders.

Boost follows fuel, so your lack of boost when cold means the it's not fueling. Did this behavior just start, or has it always been that way? Checked for codes?

It has been this way for a while but it did not always do it. I do not run the truck that much and it just started acting this way one day. Also when it is cold it smokes like crazy until it is warm.

The fact that it smokes indicates it's getting the fuel. I would consider doing a "motor flush" it cleans all the oil systems. I am making a guess that the truck has been shut down too many times with the turbo hot, and the heat has burned up enough oil in the bearing to have the "coke" binding up the bearing. A motor flush will clean all the deposits out of the pressurized oil system, and perhaps make your turbo function. If not, I would guess the bearing is smoked from shutting down with the turbo spooled, causing wear from spinning on a dry bearing.

A simple way to see if the turbo is sticking, is to pull the air cleaner boot to the turbo inlet off, and see if it spins freely when cold.

If you do a motor flush make SURE to follow the instructions. The stuff thins the oil, and can scatter your bottom end if you load the engine up with it in the oil. Fantastic product, though. I have seen it bring compression up substantially by cleaning out carbon deposits from the ring grooves, and oil pressure come up notably. Good stuff to run through before an engine overhaul, too. Saves a LOT of parts cleaning effort.
