Symptoms of a bad lift pump?

Hi all, have a 98 12v w/260k on the clock.
I just spent the last 6 hrs putting home from 3 cities away. My trucks been acting a bit funky lately, power has been weak and air has been getting in the fuel filter. I run heated fuel lines and today I put in some veggie oil, not the first time but after a few miles the truck decided it didn't want to play anymore. My fuel filter went completely dry, if I idled it long enough upside down with the bleed openit would fill back up, I'm using a clear goldenrod btw. But I noticed that when I put my finger on the bleed and opening it up after it had emptied that there was a vacuum on it and not pressure. I changed out the whole filter and put in a inline.
I'm not sure what's up with it, but it idles somewhat decent but bogs when it runs and fills up with air. Checked all the lines can't find a leak.
Any ideas? and does anyone have a list of symptoms to a bad mechanical lift pump?
Thanks

That sounds like a fuel heater failure. Might be some other air leak. Look here: Joe G's fuel system writeup

I was thinking the fuel heater may be an issue as far as air went but what about the occasional vacuum on the filter?

I'm gonna read through that post, thanks Joe.

So I removed the fuel heater and cleaned the pre filter, holy crap that pre filter was dirty!
Seriously I'm surprised i had any flow at all, it was caked. Lucky me I live in sunny florida where it rains as soon as you start to work on something. So I gotta finish plumbing the fuel lines after the rains stops and I'll let you guys know how it goes from there.

Hope all goes well. Sounds like Missouri this year. If you want it to rain in missouri this year, SCHEDULE A TRUCK PULL!

Well it stopped raining for 5 minutes, just long enough to get everything together and it runs great! Still a little low on power but I'm not complaining. Thanks Joe, your guide was a huge help.
