dont torque bands ?

I am getting ready to adj my bands and a trans guy here in town says he dont torque them to a certain # but he does it by feel !! I know him and he has done MANY racing trannys and tons of everyday cars and trucks. He has been in business for quite a while and i have never heard complaints @ his work. He seemed to be familar w yhe 48re but this threw me for a loop when he said he dont use a torque wrench. What do you think about this??

I'm not doubting his ability, some have a feel for these things. But for 72inch lbs (I Believe) why chance it.

thats retarded for you not to adjust it properly. I would personally do it yourself. just get an inch pound torque wrench and do it in the driveway. just my .02

Some guys you can follow with a torque wrench, and they are not far off. But I'm not that guy.

Well i got fluid and filter on trans changed, also adj. the bands. Good god were they loose. The one in the pan had tons of play in it. Anyhow the truck shifts now and it feels so much better. All i need now is my vb. My fluid was still red but it had a bit of a burnt smell. I will do a total drain when vb gets here.Took me a little over an hour, wish my tight a## would get a pan w/ a drain plug in it tho.

I have it to the point where I use a 1/4 inch allen wrench and put it between the band lever and servo pin and lock it down

This was easier than i thought it was. I went to sears and got the in. lb trq wrench, i wasnt gonna do the adjustment w/o one. I dont know much @ trannys and motors but im not afraid to try and do it myself. Im just glad this helped so much!! I was starting to think my trans was toast. I hope when my vb gets here it takes off a lil better. I will be towing tomorrow and i will see how it tows now.

if you had that much play in your front band, chances are it might be going out. Did you check for any abnormal signs of heat on the front drum? Just wondering. Been building trannies for a long time and always use a torque wrench for band adjustment. Well good luck.

Sorry but i wouldnt know where to look for heat damage. I did use a trq wrench too. I can say that the pan was very clean and the vb looked clean also. The fluid did have a slight burnt smell, I am gonna drain tc and everything when my vb gets here. I didnt put the tc in, the dealer mech put it in while my motor and trans were out( no charge, cool!) What should i look for as far as band wise, when i install the vb?
