5th gear loss HELP..nut is tight

alright so i lost 5th gear. figured it was the nut that backed off but its not.the nut is tight. the tail shaft is off now. so heres what happens i put the truck in fifth gear and im still able to turn the output shaft by hand. obviously gears 1-4 plus R its impossible to turn the output shaft by hand. i know the 5th gear shift fork is operating properly. everything is turning properly looking from the back (where the tail housing is off) ill pull the rest of the transmission out tomorrow and have a deeper look. i thought id ask you guys to see if you had any ideas on what it could be.i would really appreciate any help cause im 18 and this is my first time tearing down deep into the transmission.

thanks
Jory

Dang you got a big set, I woudln't even think of opening up my tranny those to me are just scary. Either way good luck to you. I am only 17 at the moment and unless you have someone there that has torn down a tranny I would send it into a shop to have it examined rather than done at home.

Its probably the splines in the 5th gear hub. Take the tailshaft case off and then look at the countershaft, take the snap ring off and check out where the hub is splined to the shaft. Chances are they are gone but it is an easy fix and can be done with the tranny still in the truck.
