|
Oil level is over full.
Hey guys heres my problem. I pulled the dip stick and it over full. The last oil change it was the same way. I did a little research what i could find and some people think that it could be an injector or a seal of some sort. Any help would be great i dont want the out come that ive heard. Thanks Brandon

How do you test the injectors. and is more likely to be the injectors or a pump seal of some sort. is it a pretty common problem

When it making oil, it just has to be fuel in your oil. Very important , you have a leak and it's diluting your oil , if you can't fix now , change oil very often until you can fix, my guess would be the pump seal.

It's pretty common for lube shops to put a little extra in, what kind of overfull are we talking about? If it's the injection pump, it will be a bit involved. All the hard lines have to come off, as well as the steering pump and vacuum pump. Your oil will smell a little funny just from running and having soot from blowby, but if the level CLIMBS it is your vp leaking. The injectors can only leak a tiny little bit, and it would be more of an issue with starting. Most likely a leaking injector would leak into one cylinder on shutdown. This is much more common with common rail engines, but not unheard of in mechanical pump systems. (The vp is still mechanical, just computer controlled) In a common rail system, the offending injector will empty the entire rail's pressure, but in a mechanical system, it can only leak the pressure from the one pressure line, and only if the engine stops with pressure in that one line. I would make sure it's actually climbing before doing anything, but if it is, I would guess it's probably the front seal on the vp.

If it's not being diluted by fuel, I would check for slow oil return from the top of the engine to the pan. I experienced this with a friends father-in-laws car. He'd check the oil constantly and keep adding and adding figuring since he wasn't leaking much that he must be burning it. In actuality the oil was crammed up in the valve covers, not able to get back to the pan due to partially blocked oil return passages in the head. When he checked it in the morning, the dipstick read really high- overnight the oil had time to seep back to the pan. Heck, he must of had 12 or 13 quarts in it in a 5 quart system. I haven't heard of this in a Cummins, but I have seen this in a gas V-8. It's probably not your problem, but i wouldn't totally rule it out either. If nothing else works ................

A Ferd I had a while back had a dip stick that was too short - so it always looked like the oil was too low. Maybe your truck has too long of a dipstick?!? just an easy check that most never think of.

Try shaking the dipstick on a piece of brown cardboard. If there is fuel in the oil it will soak into the cardboard very fast especially around the edges. If it is just oil it will slowly seep in the cardboard more uniformly. Try it on a piece of cardboard out of your wifes car so you can kind of get the hang of what it looks like with good oil. Excessive idle will also cause fuel in the oil but in my experience it has to be extremely excessive. Both injectors and VP are possible causes of fuel in the oil plus a engine. What are Miles on the truck and more importantly has any work been done on the engine where the injectors were taken out? The fuel injector has a large o ring on the body and I've seen this put in the wrong place or damaged and it will cause major fuel in the oil. Hope this helps

Ill try the cardboard trick and see what happens. the injectors have never been out as long as i have had it. the truck has 106000 miles on it. is there a easy way to test the injectors.
