Need help diagnosing no run on a 24V

OK guys, I know there is nothing you can do to pinpoint my trouble here, but let me tell you my predicament and please give me all the help you can. I just got a call saying that one of my brothers (fellow CMA member) from down south was travelling through WY and his truck quit on him. All I know is it's a 98 Cummins and so they called me as everyone knows I'm a gearhead and a cummins owner. I'm not sure if it is a 12V or 24, but since i have the 12 and know nothting of the 24 I'm going to guess 24. He said he changed fuel filters and then later on (I have no idea if it was a few miles of halfway across the country) the truck quit on him. He has a spare fuel filter, but no tools so we're going to drive to Duglas in the morning and see if we can get him running.

What kind of things can I do to check on the 24V and see where his issue is? Shoudl there be a code that tells me what's wrong or will I have to figure it out another way? I know nothign at all about 24V trucks, so any help at all will be appreciated tremendously. I need to help this guy get back on the road and anyone who can help out will have a favor anytime they need it from me.

Also, if there is a code, is there a database listing them all so I can save them to my hard drive on my laptop since I doubt I will have wireless internet whereever the truck is broke down?

One more thing, if there is a 24V guy who would be willing to give me his number in case I need to ask a question tomorrow around 12:00-1:00PM mountain time you have no idea how much it would mean to me.

Sorry for such a random buzz of confusion, just trying to prepare for tomorrows work. I'll stop begging now and wait for some ideas.

Thanks a ton,
George

Trouble codes

that should get you started.

if it is a '00 or newer try the key trick,.... key on, off, on , off, on (don't start) the codes will appear in the odometer! then compare to the list..

it may or maynot show all the codes stored. but should give you a starting point.

big question does he have a Fuel Pressure guage?

Jake, douglas is about 120 miles due south of Gillette via hwy 59. I'm about 45 miles west of Duglas in Casper. I saved the list you gave the link for and hopefully I can pick up a code reader on my way out of town in the morning and get this guy hoooked up. I talked to Headhunter for a few minutes and have a very good idea of where to start.

BTW, he was helpful and friendly as seems to be the rule around diesel guys.

OK, I got down here and th truck is a 12V 1998. It is getting fuel to the pump and the shutoff solenoid is clicking over like it should. I loosened a couple of injector lines and there is no fuel coming out when the engine turns over. So, if it's getting fuel to the P7100 and not to the injector what can be going on inside to keep it from pumping?

Also, I found that the truck started, then quit after running a few minutes. This all happened after changing the fuel filter. If it somehow got air in the lines would it have run for a few and then stopped? How long should it crank over to purge the air with #1 and #3 injector lines loose?

I'm going to do a little search on this and then check back before going back in the cold to work on the truck.

Thanks for any help here.

George

Crack the fuel line right where it enters the P-7100. Find a broom stick or something similar and down on the lift pump there is a black rubber plunger. Using the stick or whatever (now you see why you wanted it) pump the plunger 'til fuel comes out at the banjo bolt you loosened up. You can try to start it or even bleed an injector or two. It may run rough for a couple of minutes, but should straighten out. If you can't get fuel at the IP, then start backtracking until you find the problem. let us know what you find.

Well, here is how it stands now. I filled the fuel filter cup with fuel and cracked a couple of injectors and it started right up. I tightened the injectors and it ran wonderful for about 5-6 minutes then it was out of fuel. The rubber lines coming off the metal lines from the tank were loose and so I put a hose clamp on each line to seal it off better to the steel.

We never could get a prime to the lift pump. We took turns pushing the primer bulb for about 15 minutes and still never managed to get a prime to it. Putting fuel in the filter housing will let it run fine, it's just not getting fuel fromt he tank to the lift pump for some reason. Is there a pump in the tank that could have gone bad? I cannot remember if there is an in tank pump or not on these trucks (bad memory for me)

So, given that we never could get fuel to the lift pump combined with the fact that it just quit working out of the blue what do you think is the issue?

George
