Won't start!! I need help!!
Hello everyone. I picked up my 95 2500 4x4 auto yesterday and drove it home over 4 hours. Now I go to fire it up this morning and nothing. It won't turn over at all. I have power to everything inside the truck and the headlights still burn bright. I checked the battery voltages with the 2 batts seperate and together and got 12.79 Vdc. I tryed swapping out the starter relay with my horn relay since the part numbers on them are the same. And still nothing. I don't understand how the thing was starting just fine at every stop I made last night and now this morning absolutely nothing. And what is the deal with having to press the criuse control button to start it? Is that something that is on all of the early dodges? I also tried jumpstarting it this morning. Thanks all for your help.

Cruise button to start it? Sounds like someone along the line has added some "security." I would take your DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) and check for power and signal at the relay. If you don't have power to the relay, it won't trigger the starter. If you need a better explination let me know. Relays can be tough to explain. JP

This problem is very wierd. I just went out and tried starting it again and it fired right up. I think it may be something with the cruise/security startup. I will research more into it and post what I find. One question though....is there a switch that won't allow the truck to start if it isn't in park? After reading Jakey's post I gave that a try and then put my truck back in park and now starts up.

Yes there is. There is a switch down in the transmission that is tripped by the linkage that will only allow the truck to start if it is in Park or Neutral. JP

The linkage has a few junction points. The linkage comes out of the column down behind the plastic innerfender behind the drivers front wheel. From there it has a rod that comes across to the transmission. I'd check it out there. When you follow the linkage to the transmission the plug for the sensor is pretty obvious. It just screws into the side of the transmission case. I don't know of any diagrams right now. Next time I take my transmission (or someone elses) I'm going to take quite a few pictures and label somethings for the forums. DD

Battery terminals?

Check for loose or corrodded clamps, posts, and cables. If corrosion is present on the cable between clamp and insulation your not going to get enough amperage to the starter. The only thing to do with corroded cables is replace them. The clamps can be cleaned with a wire brush. Auto parts stores have post and clamp cleaning brushes for this purpose. Also check the groud cables (both batts) at the engine block. Make sure they are clean and tight. Loose and corroded clamps and cables will give you this type of intermitten problem. Good Luck |
