Performance Transmission Rebuild

Hi, I have a 1993 W350 auto with about 90k on it, and I plan on eventually making a 400ish horsepower truck out of it, but being 17 I can only do so much with the money I have. I am selling my dirtbike to get some cash, and the first thing I plan on building is the transmission. I was just wondering what parts I should look at, while also keeping cost as relative as possible. I am looking for a pretty sturdy low stall torque converter, which one? Also regarding shift kits, I want it to have a more aggressive shift, but remain a true auto, I'm not looking for a manual valve body. My intention is to get all of the parts together, then bring it to a shop to put together for me to try and save a little money, and my knowlege on the internals of a 518 is minimal. Also, what would be the average price to rebuild the transfer case? I also plan on doing the U-joints while its apart, but I have a solid idea of how expensive that should be. I know that the transfer case is most likely not necessery, but I am big on preventative maintnence so I belive that it would be a good thing to at least look at.

Thanks, Blaine

I have to agree. To a point. A good rebuild and a torque converter will go a long way, from what I hear.

i would continue to drive it and continue modding the truck until it slips, but im one of those people who wants to get the most out of something before i replace it. one guy on here is putting way over 300hp through his 518 and its still stock, these trannies will take quit a bit of power. if i were you i would just get a hd rebuild kit, and a goerend torque converter.

Right, well what torque converter and shift kit would be the best for my needs? The truck is mostly just going to be a hot rod, it rarely tows anything other than a ski boat. I'm just trying to collect all the info I can!

did mine awhile back -

but that was at about 350 000 kms. Tugged a 32 foot trailer all over BC and Alberta - a few trip into the US. Stock was just fine - until it slipped. rebuilt it with the shift body, better quality clutch packs and a low stall (700 rpm) converter. In hind sight i would do it again but look for a higher stall converter; I have to slip it into neutral at a long red light to give the trans a rest. This truck came with the factory auxilary cooler (infront of the left rear wheel) - and I would recommend extra cooling. its been about 200 000 kms since the rebuild - no sign of ageing or failure.
