The pinion has no shaft play; the two bearings are shim'd to deliver a preload on the bearings. This preload is set by the resulting drag required to turn the shaft.

The carrier shims set not only the bearing preload but locate the carrier side-to-side for the backlash specification. The pinion headbearing shims set the depth of the pinion so it meshes with the ring gear properly.
cheers,
Douglas

Youll need to know how to measure and set up backlash and preload to set this new center section up correctly or you will be tearing it out quickly as well

I would suggest reading this PDF. Then decide if you think you can do this. Your first diff rebuild is normaly better to have an experienced person there to guide you. If you make mistakes he will correct them as needed. If not all your work will end up like your current axle.

Philip speaks wisely...I didn't do the re-bearing on mine. Turned out to use only the OE shims, but if it didn't I would have been up that well-known creek w/o paddle.
cheers,
Douglas
