Easiest Way to turn the power screw??
What is the easiest way to get to the power screw? I have tried from every angle. Maybe my hands are too big or something but I cant even see it, Someone who has done it. How was it done? Thanks

your talking about the full power screw on the backside, right? I wanna try turning that just a bit and see what it does.
I was looking at it the other day, but there was no way I could get any screwdriver in there. Never thought about using a wrench - one of the techs at work has a set of those tiny micro-wrenches. Maybe I will borrow one of those and try, they say you can get like 1/2 turn sometimes before the tab stops you, right? I really dont feel safe backing the thing all the way out to cut the tab. I already tried turning the smoke screw up a little. I gave it about 1.5 full turn and didnt get any increase in power or smoke lol. So i gave up on that one. I would try the fuel pin and the starwheel, but I am afraid to crack into the wet part of the pump. I dont think the little thumb depressor on my lift pump works so if I loose fuel I might dig myself into a hole...

As far as the smoke screw goes, you need to go 2 or 3 turns to see any more smoke and if you're looking for more power you're wasting your time on the smoke screw. Mine is bottomed out to the top of the jambnut but I pan on bringing it back a turn or 2 when I get home til I get my stack. |

Oh yeah, as far as the fuelpower screw goes, I gave up after awhile because it was way hot outside, I was dehydrated, and I couldn't turn the jambnut on the idle screw so I could turn it down. Even with a hammer and punch. I took a small screwdriver and bent the tip to reach the power screw and it seemed to work ok. It's a bit of a pain to not keep hitting the shutoff solenoid with your wrench when you're trying to turn the locknut, shutting the truck off. It's a pain when you have a lifted truck and you're a fat boy like me and have to keep climbing up and down on and off the bumper to turn the truck back on. All I'm gonna say is have a helper present lol. But like I said...that idle screw is a PITA and you need to be able to turn it down. Maybe try turning it first so if you can't get it you don't have to turn the fuel screw back down like I had to.

I didn't leave my truck running when I adjusted the full power screw
I took a pair of needle nose vise-grips and just twisted the collar off, came off real easy. Then adjusted the power screw using a ratcheting box end wrench to break the lock nut loose and then a 1/4" drive socket on a u-joint to turn the screw in 1.5 turns.I did find adjusting the idle to be the real pain though, that made adjusting the power screw seem easy.

I left it running so I could bump the throttle every 1/4 turn so I don't hit runaway driving down the highway. That's just me though.

Okay, does someone have a picture of the idle screw because im not sure which on that is. I get the jamnut loosened and then I turn the powerscrew in right? Then im going to want to lower the idle a bit because the power screw raises the idle correct??? Thanks alot!

Wow. Yes there is a separate screw. You WILL need to turn it down. I also recommend adjusting the screw with the motor running and bumping the throttle every 1/4 turn or so and make sure you don't hear the rpms hanging as this means you may be in danger of runaway which is bad...very bad. Non-I/C trucks tend to hit runaway sooner than IC trucks for some reason. I only turned mine one turn before the throttle started hanging. Read this whole thread and pay close attention.
Governor Spring/VE Info Threads Merged.. - TDR Roundtable Don't start messing with the fuel screw and the internals until you are very familiar with the pump and have done research. Good luck and have fun with it but be safe about it. |
