First gen wizards--look here--advice needed!!
I got a buddy that is building a truck with this engine. He needs way more power to pull with, and I need some advice. Switching to a p-pump or switching to a 94 or newer engine is not in the budget, so I have a few questions. How big of any injector can be run with the pump turned up all the way, and an HX 40? What size injector and turbo can be run with sticking with the VE pump just turned up? Any other mods to get more power out of this thing? Who sells govenor spring kits for first gen engines, and does it change just like the 2nd gen 12 valves?? Oh yeah the truck is intercooled. Thanks in advance

go over to Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource - Cummins - Home read some of the stuff in the sticky about pump mods, there's a lot of good info on the motors over their. The gov springs are completely different, ours are inside the top of the pump, and they only cost around $16. DTR also has info on installing these. Source auto can get the gov spring, just get the part number from over on dtr. DDP and a few others have injectors. Good luck, hope I got ya pointed in the right direction.

The first question I would ask is how much weight does he tow. That will tell us what he can do to turn it up. On our engines about 300 HP is the most you can tow with due to EGt's.

How much does a sled weigh??? ![]() He uses it to sled pull, occasionally, other than that, he tows nothing, so jut 300 feet of towing.

Pulling and towing mean the same till you put "Sled" in front of the pulling. ![]() He is going to need bigger injectors and a bigger turbo. Those two items with his intended usage means O'rings and studs most likely.

Your in luck! The VE with a sweet set of injectors will flow more fuel than you need, trust me on this!! However......the bad news. Your, er, your truck will need tons od parts to use all that fuel. The cooling system likely will need to be in tip top shape. A new rad will help here and likley a new fan clutch. The exhaust system will need to be very high flow as well as the intake. And, it will need all the cold air you can feed it. An open intake setting inside the engine bay ain't going to work. The turbo? You will need a big one. Like, big. No warmed over H1 or 35. You'll need plenty of flow and I'm not talking about 50-60 psi. You need FLOW. Pull the head and get it ported and polished. Then, install a three piece manifold cuz you'll need it to handle the heat and flow the CFM you'll need to keep them pistons cool with all that fuel. Upgrade the fuel lines too. Bigger suction side. High flow lift pump. An electric with flow return. The upgraded piston lift pump likely would work *if* you can keep the inlet above 7 psi or so. You need all the gauges too. Transmission? Is it auto? Manual? That will need attention too. The injectors would likely be 370's but not too much more than that as you'll (he) will have extream EGT issues. Going to need water injection for the hills too with just a little meth to adjust for the timing. Too much meth will ADD fuel/ heat, and you won't need any more with a modded pump and 370's. The head could use studs too. It would be much cheaper to build a dyno rig than a puller. You can cut corners on a truck that sees a big load for ten seconds. You won't be able to do so pulling a heavy trailer with 200 cc's or more of fuel per stroke from the VE I'm running outta time here.........

On greenleaf's note, big fuel supply followed with a good set of injectors and a good charger to complement your fueling. What class is he planning on running in? That's where I would start. What charger is allowed? 2.6, 2.8, 3.0?

Thanks alot for the input guys!!! One other question- will a HX 35 and a B2 twin setup or a HX 35 and a HTB3 setup flow enough air to compliment 370's??? Pretty good apickin out chargers on the 2nd gen trucks, but that is all I am familiar with.

What ever injectors your looking to get make sure they are for a 1st gen. The spray angles are different between our VE engine and a P-pump engine. How many holes and what size on the 370's??

The 370 are P-Pump units for marine use. They are 5x.012 according to my notes. The spray tip is for the marine piston bowl design. They flow about as much as a Lucas. You are correct.........You will need twins to use all that fuel. A really big turbo ain't going to work. By the time a large turb gets going, the engine will be near or at 1,200 °F then it begins to flow/push air. A twin set up will flow air at lower rpm and at top speed. I don't know what two turbos to use. Too may out there. I don't tow and have Lucas injectors. Simply pressing the throttle down to the floor nets me 1500°F in a few seconds. I'd need a ported head and twins to begin to use that.
