he351 boost psi

i just put my he351 on the runner and i'm only getting around 21 pounds of boost and with my old hx35w i was getting 35 pounds. all i've done so far is pull the elctric part off and plug the hole. is this normal?

pull that plug and look into the hole. you'll see two holes, one that runs straight in, and a smaller one that runs off at about a 45 degree angle back to the inlet
that little hole has to be plugged, otherwise you are running boost pressure right back to the inlet of the turbo.

I believe that's all the boost you're going to get without an adjustable boost elbow. It will bleed off some of the boost going to the wastegate operator allowing it to build more boost before it opens the wastegate.

Don't weld anything, but do find a way to keep your wastegate closed. That way, when you decide to sell your HE351, it will be easier.

Then adjust your pump to get boost up to around +/- 38 psi if possible.

Do NOT do that. I've had two people PM me already with HE351 issues caused by welding the gate shut. Use a boost elbow.

On my HE351, the shaft was welded. You should tell us what kind of issues arise when the wastegate is welded shut. I never had any issues with mine, but who would want it now with the shaft welded the way it is? That's why I don't condone doing any welding. A boost elbow is the best way to go no doubt.

Both cases were with P-pumped trucks and gutted or modified AFC's. Basically WOT is no longer possible since the turbo spins up so high. In a VP'ed or CR'ed truck it's not as much of a problem since it can be turned down. My 351 responds well up to about 40psi. Once you get into the 50+ range, drive pressures are at 70psi. It just seems like 40-45psi is the sweet spot. I opened up the wastegate port to a little over 1". Added a boost elbow, and a spring on the wastegate arm. I'm thinking about taking off the spring though.
