Question H.O. capable Shutoff Solenoid

So I've been thinking (drumroll please)...my truck is currently a cable-shutoff baby as a result of a shredded fuel shutoff solenoid (FSO). I've had the cable on for over a year, no problems until yesterday when the mild steel wire that is the inside part of my cable (just a cheap manual choke cable) snapped off. Probably as a result of moving back and forth a million times. Now getting a new cable is no big deal ($30?) or getting a better, heavier cable ($60-80 or more) is also an option BUT on my drive home today I began the thinking part. Some of you guys have sanded the ends of your rubber stopper deals inside the FSO and got it to work again, more or less, and some of you haven't had luck this way. I even read somewhere where one style of FSO tip is solid and will work without the rubber portion on. Now I could also continue to buy replacements and hope the tips don't erode off but that probably wont happen. What if I took a new FSO plunger and had a solid steel unit turned on a lathe to be an exact replica only in all steel rather than erodable (is that even a word?) rubber? This would work AND not break under higher pressure right? I mean, these could be made for like nothing and no one would have to run cables anymore (if they didn't want to. I kinda like it except for when they break). Anyone have anything to say about this? Has it been done?

You just mount the cable in/through the dash, run it in as straight a line as possible to the emergency shutoff lever on your pump, rig the end of the cable through the lever and that's it. Pull to stop truck. Push to make truck run.

ZSkibo,
Only problem I see is the solenoid may not have enough magnetic pull to lift a solid steel plunger.
I've got the plunger style that is solid, believe I bought the one for a VW on ebay. The tip is solid - the rest is a tube.
The tip has no rubber on it and I've had no problems yet. Been working since S.O.P. 6 - beginning of Oct.
I even turned the pump back up to the edge of runaway.

Hmmm...a VW FSO you say? Have a link to one so I know I'm getting the right thing?

No sorry.
Got it on eBay...
Search for fuel shutoff, then search diesel. Or try VW then diesel then fuel shutoff...

Just checked eBay - nothing listed now.
Try checking at your local dealer. Mine said he usually kept one in stock but didn't have one on hand and he could get in 2 -3 days. Don't remember the dealer price but it was ~ $30.

Looks exactly like ours.
