Apparently to the head and beyond. I have mine about an 1/8" advanced but I go back and forth from the head on occasion as well.

I advanced mine to the head and haven't had any issues. As far as moving the pump I had to use a dead blow hammer and a ratchet strap to pull it while I smack it up.

I understood there were 4 nuts to move it, am I wrong?

There is a Video on Youtube of how to do it.

the P-pumps have 4 bolts mounting to the timing case. The VE only has 3.

Some may disagree but I always disconnect all the injector lines when moving them pump. It seems to make sense to me to not be flexing them while moving the pump and eases some of the tension holding it against where you are trying to move it. It does not make sense to hit the pump with a hammer of any type but that's just me. Good luck!

yeah three nuts and one bolt. I put a strap and ratchet on mine and it tightened it as tight as it I dared go and it didn't budge. Grabbed a rubber mallet and with a few taps I had it right where I wanted it.
