How much power does bumping the timing to the head give you?

I don't know hp numbers but from 40-80mph it was the best single "seat of the pants" mod I've done.

that seems like a lot because it does decrease lower rpm hp.. but I've never dyno'd or anything so I really don't know a heck of a lot on mods-hp ratio

it's probably not gaining you 60 hp, just gives more snap to it and makes it feel like more.

Well hers my lil story.. on my 91 this summer, while on holidays. i decided to advance my pump. I used a set of pliers from the head to a screw on the AFC to pull the pump over. advanced it about an 1/8th". not sure if the pump was previously advanced on the gear (if thats possible) but the pump was still a solid half inch away from the head. well anyways, the truck pulled pretty hard empty up hills, and my EGTS didn't climb nearly as quickly. i could still hit 1500 tho well anyways, on my way home..empty by the way, after about 300 kms i pulled off to get off the highway. i noticed my truck wasn't running right. when i stopped, i definatly knew something was wrong. the truck was running so rough it wasn't even funny. sounded like an old gas tractor. well anyways, i had to go to a wedding that day, so i pulled up to the wedding, and the truck was smoking and running terrible. i still had to drive home another 100 km that night, and the truck had no power and the boost gauge would like shudder, unless i floored it, it would still build 30 psi of boost, with slightly less power. anyways, moral of the story, i pulled the head and what happened was the head gasket blew between #5 and #6. there was a solid 1 inch gap in the gasket, with pieces of the steel ring stuck in one of the valves. So basically, just be careful when advancing the pump. what i figured is that pump was advanced too much and the cylinder pressures were too high and thats what blew the gasket. just a warning

To adjust pump timing without hitting the pump with a hammer (yikes!) I remove both sets of injector lines. I then loosen the retaining nuts and give the pump a twist by hand. If it's tight going to the head I can wiggle it back and forth and it'll usually go where I want it. If its really tight, I get out my barring tool and turn the motor over a bit and it always goes where I want it then. Again, do what you want with your truck but using a hammer to adjust your injection pump is like using a rock to clean bugs off your paint or something (best analogy I could come up with with only one cup of coffee in me). It's a $900 dollar piece of precision machinery not a trailer hitch.
