On the running out of fuel, I installed a "booster" electric fuel pump along the frame rail upstream from the mechanical lift pump. It's rigged so it runs with my fuel cut-off circuit, so when it's running I can fill new fuel filters, bleed the system, and even used it once to pump water-contaminated fuel out of the tank.
