A u-joint normaly gives a on/off squeal. I have seen u-joints that didn't make any sound. Then haul a load and get the suspension out of its normal range of movement. Then it starts making noise and doesn't stop.

A fast test is go for a drive. Make it around 5 miles or so. Then crawl under the truck and fee the u-joint caps. A warm or hot u-joint is normaly bad.

That is the best and easiest way to find out if its a you joint or not.

And yeah James, a u-joint will make 1 he!! of a noise when they start to go out. And if i where you, ide hurry up and see if 1 is goin bad, and if it is and the squeak gets worse, ide try not to drive it if you can keep from it. Trust me, u dont want 1 to give away at 70mph.

There are a couple of things which have caused squealing on mine. One was the steady bearing. Another was a broken retainer clip on the front brake pads which let them rub against the inside of the rim. Another was a worn out wheel bearing.

Test the steady bearing by touching it after a drive. It can get quite hot. It is the inner rubber mount which squeals when the bearing starts seizing. This can go on for a long time. The bearing can seize and then release many times before everything comes apart. It is a good idea to check it early.
