I had to add a W-wire for my tach to work, here are basic instructions and some pictures.
First-remove alternator, and remove backcover, 3 small nuts, and 1 large nut which holds plastic wire guard. May have to pry gently.
Second-Then remove screw from stator wire.I made short jumper wire with an eye on one end and a spade connecter for easy removal. Double heat shrink on eye end for protection. Install on stator screw.
Third-Carefully trim back cover for wire passage. Install back cover, feeding wire thru cover. Install nuts and install alternator, wires, etc.

Hi all. How does one run a tach like an Autometer on a diesel. I have a large 5"" face telltale i would love to use.
My 5.9 is in a 91 Ford and I am using the Ford alternator. Will this work on it?
Any help would be appreciated, and thanx, or better yet how does one make the Ford factory tach work on a 5.9?
Thanx all.

do you know what kind of signal it needs? the ones that we used were autometer ones from www.surpluscenter.com. cost of 19 bucks and meant to be run off the alt.
Hey! That alternator looks just like mine!
Just for an update, Surplus center sold out of these Tachs about 3 weeks after I posted the wiring. I wonder why?
I'm glad Swank spread it around so everybody could use it. :thumbsup
Find an old mechanical tach and get an alternator tapped to mechanical drive convertor. Another option is to find a mechanical tach from a 4bt. I heard they are more rare then first gen tachs.
