It all started with simply replacing the front springs (front end re-build thread)

Then it turned into "let's tear the whole front end apart, rebuild it, and paint everything." Well, actually, it all started out with a pair of leaf springs that I have all of $97 in. I bought a set of leaf springs for $40, add-a-leafs for $25 and spring bushings for $32. After a little time with the wire wheel and some paint, they were ready to go on the truck.

After we got the axle dropped and were about to put the springs in my dad says "hey, why not paint the axle while we got it out?" Well, we pulled it this morning and the pinion seal is blown and water was coming out of it (great ) The u-joints are shot, it needs new brake calipers, and it probably needs new kingpins so I guess this will just be a build thread for my front end rebuild, and I may just turn it into a build thread for the whole truck, who knows? Anyway, I took some more pics so, here they are.

As you can see, my old springs were SHOT and about rubbed in two.

Axle ready to be pressure washed/steam cleaned

This really sucks having to do this in the yard.

How do you guys think my truck will look with triples? You can also see in this pic how bad the front springs are. There is NO arch to them just hanging there, you should have seen them with the weight of the truck on them, they were actually DE-arched.

Looking good man...

I love your little catch phrase

I was rolling through Indina and listing to the CB and this trucker says " don't know why there is any exits, there aint no place to go" It was funny, There is nothing off the highway but corn fields...

hey your springs look a whole lot like mine! infact so does you axle... I REALLY should tear into my truck, it's seen better days.
My leafs are as you put it "de-artched" too. They actually rest on the rubber stops on the frame
I need new complete suspension but I am not going to bother until I can do it all and do it right.

Get some more pics up as you do more of the work

Don't forget to replace the bushing in the frame.
Stop complaining, at least your yard isn't covered with a foot of snow on top of 2" of ice.

And when you burn them out with the torch cause that is the only way to get them out, try not to burn through the fuel lines like someone I know did...

Yeah it's pretty boring around here, nothing but corn fields. Especially where I'm at is a farming community. The only plus is there is TONS of diesels out here.

The rear shackle bushings? I'll have to track some of those down.

Yeah, I'm enjoying this heat wave we've been having.

Thanks for the tip.

Pic of the axle cleaned up waiting on a wire wheel job and a coat or 5 of paint:

Got the springs in today, I told dad about replacing those shackle bushings but he just said "ahh it don't need 'em" So, those didn't get replaced. Anyway, here's some pics of the springs in the truck and the axle painted. Judging by the arch in the springs, I should have no problem clearing 35's.

That rear shackle has me worried, I think it may go forward when I put weight on it. So the plan for this week is to take the bed off, clean the frame, paint it, under coat the bed, and I may pull the trans/tcase, clean them up and paint them and put my new tail housing on the transmission. We'll see how far I get.

If you'll build me a shop to work in I'll do it.

I got the axle thrown back in tonight and got my new wheels with some bald mud terrains put on. It looks GOOD!! I figure if I get some tires with some meat on them it will look damngood. I'm thinking BFG KM2's.

Now, I just need to get the bed off to paint the frame, do the rest of the frame & wheel wells. Then I'll be pulling the trans/tcase and overhauling the transmission then painting them, then the rear axle will come out when I get new springs for it and that'll all get painted, so then the only thing that won't be painted drivetrain wise will be the engine. Then when that's all done, when I can get a rust free bed I'll be painting it dark metallic blue this spring. It will be the dark blue that GM used on the 88-98 trucks but with a little more flake in it. Then when all the paint work is done, it's time for performance mods!

I'm gonna give the springs a day or tow to settle out and see where they'll actually be. When I put the weight down on them they compressed 2.5" and the rear shackle is now vertical.

Pics:

In the next pics I had a jack under the rear to level it.

I think I've decided to just use this as a build thread for my truck, so I'm going to request to have it renamed and moved to the non-powertrain forum.

Man, that looks awesome with the new springs on it. Good job. I think I see this in the future for my tuck. Did you have to modify the front drive line for the extra height?
