My 2 cents is to leave it in and, if you have the patience, try to get it to do what you want. You may just be up against the limitations of the tuner with your current hardware.
Regardless, if you are happy with the gauge package, keep the thing turned down and use it for monitoring. It's still going to be there if you decide you need some extra juice from time to time.
