Recently I have been looking at supplemental filters to add to my truck. I know I want an additional fuel water sep and a 2 mic. I have been madly researching the ratings of the commonly used filters. I figured while I was at it I would get the entire ratings for the PF7977 OE style fuel filter that many of us use...
Here is the scoop on it. 5 microns absolute, with an average efficiency of 99.31%. Water stripping: 97-99% free water, 92-95% emulsified water. And it has a dirt holding capacity of 25.5 grams. 509.1 sq in of filtration media...
The OEM filter is the FS19800E, 7 microns absolute, 96% at 5 microns, 95% emulsifed water removal, and 98% free water removal, w/ 14g of dirt holding capacity.
Here are the specs on some commonly used fuel/water seps and fuel filters..
BF1212 (fuel water sep) 20 microns absolute, average efficiency of 86.34%, Water stripping: 97-99% free water, 92-95% emulsified water. And it has a dirt holding capacity of 35.9 grams, 579.0 sq in of filtration media, and a flow rating of 210gph.
FS1212 (fuel water sep.. same app as BF1212) > 20 microns absolute, 20 microns at 95%. Water stripping: 90% free water, 90% emulsified water. And it has a dirt holding capacity of 22 grams, and a flow rating of 90gph.
BF7633, this is commonly referred to as a 2 mic filter, buts its not. 5 microns absolute. Average efficiency of 98.11% And it has a dirt holding capacity of 27.4 grams, 701.6 sq in of filtration media, and a flow rating of 170gph. But this is a multipass rating...
FS5320 this is commonly referred to as a 2 mic filter, buts its not. Its 5 mics absolute, and 90% at 2 microns. Single pass rated.
Cat 1R0750. 2 mics absolute, single pass rated.
Donaldson P5513132, 2 mics absolute, single pass rated.
The 1212 series is very commonly used, but I received emails from both Fleetguard and Baldwin stating that it is a vacuum only filter, were not using it in that fashion.. I have asked for an equivalent pressure filter part number.
And here is the real kicker... While researching which filters to put on my truck I looked at the air dog setup based on all the positive comments. Well I got the specs on the filters and I am very unimpressed.... My single PF7977 is a better water stripper and equivalent filter... From what I understand the Airdog 100 flows 100GPH, yet the flow of FF5613 is 59.97 GPH, and the FS19768 is only 19.82 GPH... seems to me the pump operates above the rated flow, which leads me to think that they are not filtering at max efficiency.... I also noticed the FS19768 is not rated to remove any emulsified water. Its rated at 50% for free water. Also the FF5613 is a 5 micron filter, not a 3 micron. FS19768 is a 140 micron filter.
At this point I am going to run the cat or Donaldson 2 mic between my OE filter and the CP3. I will keep the PF7977 in the OE mount. I will add the pressure equivalent, hopefully there is on, of the BF1212 between the OEM LP and the OE filter bowl. This should provide the best filtration possible.
