Are you absolutely sure you are really taking off from a dead stop in OD (or any gear other than 1st for that matter)? It is normal for torqueflites to remain in 3rd (direct) until you are almost completely stopped and then it will drop to 1st. Taking off from low speeds will always suck unless you pull it into second.

It is also not necessarily uncommon for the electronically controlled torqueflites to make a second gear start since that is the default "limp home" gear for them to be in. It could be a sign of forthcoming issues and/or possibly a bad pressure transducer or governor solenoid.
