Polarco,

After unplugging my EGR my fuel mileage increased dramatically. I went from 15.5 hand calc to about 18.5. Thats a huge percentage.

I also notice that the temp outside has a huge impact on fuel mileage now. The lie-o-meter says about 21 on a nice warm day and about 19 and change on a cold day.

Also it quit throwing the P0405 code. No codes are being thrown anymore but the CEL is still lit. Whats going on with that?

Also any ideas why the fuel mileage goes up so much by unplugging the EGR?

Steve, you have to be retired. Way too much time on your hands.

Actually no I am not retired. I am self employed. But I am a good machanic and things don't take me long to do because I have the tools.

It's amazing what a 10 pound hammer can do for removing and installing windshields.

The engine light is probably because the EGR is disconnected.

The mileage goes up because you are dramatically improving the combustion in the cylinders by giving them more clean air and not a mix of unburned gasses and air. This reduces soot being recycled through the engine and down into the DPF.

The other gain is the DPF does not regen as often. This saves a bunch of fuel

Yeah, I figured that was why the CEL was still on. I was just wondering why it quit giving me the P0405 code.

Once you install the freeze plug there is no way it will come out on it's own. I had to lightly tap mine in too and I just did so until it was flush. I actually think I need to pull the tube and pound it in a bit further because I see that I'm getting some soot on the engine in that general area so it must be keeping me from getting a nice tight seal at that connection.
I too have noticed that my mileage goes down in the colder weather. I'm down about 1 point but it's still 2-3 mpg better than before.
Good info Steve. Thanks for being the guinea pig here. I'm thinking about putting my stock exhaust back on, pulling the blockoff plates, and just running with the EGR unplugged. My truck got the same mileage that way as it does now. Of course I waited until I put my 5.9 CAT on the truck to make this decision. BTW, the 5.9 CAT cut the noise output by about half but more importantly it totally got rid of my drone. I'm very happy with the sound now. Now I have to decide if I can live with the truck not making any noise again....

Heh

I have a dumb question Mark

Can you hear the nice sounds up front?

I am running the 6.7 cat and no DPF right now. The 6.7 cat has less restriction than the 5.9 cat. The muffler has more restriction than the cat does

After reading countless threads on unplugging it still seems undecided if doing so causes soot, condensation and sludge build up. Some people say yes, some say no. Soots gotta go somewhere if not burned.

Would like to hear someone who has driven with it unplugged for several 1000 miles and then opened it up to look. No long term proof of effects of simply unplugging that I've seen. Anyone?

Then you have not read all of them. I posted numerous times the valve is leaking soot and condensation into the intake. I just pulled the valve off Sunday after 3000 miles and there wasn't 1 speck of loose soot or condensation.

Knowing that, it tells me the exhaust pressure is pushing the valve open.
