Lonewolf,

All you need is a $1 1-1/8 steel, deep cup freeze plug from the local auto parts store. Mine actually cost 40 cents. What you want to do is remove the 4 screws holding down the plastic cover on the top of your engine, this is the one that says cummins on it. Under the front of that is a 1-1/8 inside diameter tube bent in a wide u shape. It runs from the passenger side of the engine to the EGR valve that you have unplugged on the driver's side. It has a clam shell type clamp on each end of it. I was able to removed both clamps and carefully twist the pipe so the passenger end is facing up. (There is a bolt and flange on the underside that is also holding it in place that I found easier to leave.) Then take the freeze plug and place it in the end of the pipe. Take a socket about the inside diameter of the freeze plug and a hammer and carefully tap the freeze plug until it is flush with the end of the tube. Reassemble everything in reverse order of removal and move on down the road.

Hope this helps.

Chris

After installing the freeze plug do you unplug the EGR or leave it plugged in. Also does this throw a cel? Thanks

I'm not chris but yes you have to unplug the egr and yes you will get a CEL. Just ignore it.

Thumbs up Unpluging EGR and pluging Crossover tube

Unplugged my EGR and put a freeze plug in the crossover tube and saw immediate results. Gas mileage improved about 3 MPG and Truck temp went doen about 15-20 degrees from what I can tell by looking at the gauge. Thanks for the info. Just one question. Am I going to have to take it off and clean it out over time or will the soot make it way out on its own or does it even build up in there now? Thanks again.

Ok. So can anyone explain this to me or us.
What's the different between installing a freeze plug in the cross over tube,
and installing blocking plate between the cooler and the exhaust manifold.
We're doing the same thing, just sooner, which keeps the cooler free of exhaust gases and heat.
Is there a sensor in there somewhere that.
Thanks

I took mine off before before a 600 mile round trip to Texas and night/day difference in power/fuel/temps it was like driving a new truck again! You should see the blockage I had in the heater grate on the Intake....! I think everyone should tear down to this point and look, it couldn't hurt and is easy to get to...

crossover tube plug

Would this work on a C&C as well as on a regular pickup since they're a little different as far as having two plugs on the crossover tube. Thanks

I guess nobody know why the EGT's are SO high in the 1st place do ya?Heat is what makes the aftertreatment(mandated by the EPA) system working w/o doing regen's
So by what you are doing is contrary to the ECM's calibration. What you have to have is a calibration that doesn't require any of the EPA's emmission system which is Illeagal in the United States and Europe.Soot is consider an inert matter(no oxygen,no fuel)to COOL the combustion down to meet exhaust emissions. The aftertreatment doc/dpf,is use
to cause a chemical reaction (HEAT) for a conversion of the exhaust GASES and the DPF-diesel particlate FILTER traps whats not converted into a gas.The FILTER is consider the same as an oil,ail or fuel filter-owners responsabilty!
