Towing with the new auto

I have been looking at used trucks and have found some good deals even with autos. I really like the manuals for pulling but I have thought about looking at the autos. So for those of you that have gone from a manual to the new 6 speed autos do you have any regrets especially when towing.

I pull a 20 ft gooseneck stock trailer and a 5th wheel with a dry weight of almost 10k (Excel 28RT).

Thanks.

No issues pulling my 15,500 lb 5th wheel up or down the mountains with my 68RFE.

I have a 2007 with the 6 speed auto that I bought used this past June. I use it to pull my 7000* toyhauler between Nevada and Utah. I was rather disappointed the first time I pulled it up the mountain. I could only go about 50 mph because the other idiots wouldn't get out of my way.

I know I am towing a bit lighter than you but with the automatic I keep forgetting I am pulling a trailer and I have to keep slowing down.

I pulled a 42ft 5thwheel from carthage tx to myton utah. 31 total hours and all kinds of road. hills, flat, windy, snowy. with a 08 2500 mega cab 6.7 auto. AND I LOVED IT. It pulled it better than my current 08 one ton with a 6 speed manual. if you getin into the mountains drop er in 4th and hold on. I never had a problem losing speed or struggling up a hill... heck I even passed a few slow pokes goin up hill in about arizona I believe. you will not be dissapointed at all I dont believe.

210,000 miles on my 68 auto tranny with 3.73's. 4th gear is frikkin awesome in the mountains. Tranny gets warm in city while towing. I would get a cooler with fan for it to cure it and make it last longer.

Stuck in the damn shop, guess I broke a cap where the hard line meets the tranny. Leaked atf everywhere. in the shop now bored, hopefully to hit the road again. Sucks being broke down only 150 miles from the house.

Other then that, tranny works great as long as temps stay below 230f on my truck now, another story.

i do sometimes beat myself in the arse for the manual, but if I can get another 100,000 miles out of my tranny, I will be happy. Crap, im happy I got 210,00 with an avg weight of 20-25,000 pounds behind me with a brick wall above my cab. Quite impressed on this little ole truk!!!!!!!

Myton huh? Guessing you must be a hill climber? Only reason to be in Myton is the Widow Maker!

I used to drive a manual and have been disappointed with every automatic I ever drove. When my wife made me buy the new truck with an auto, I was worried. I am about over it. The 6 speed with engine brake and tow haul mode perform very well. I have a 9500 lb fifth wheel, and it pulls easily through the mountains. Down hill control is great. I sometimes find myself turning off tow haul mode for deccel and downgrades because it downshifts too far and slows down too much.

Only thing I have noticed is that you can not pull out in higher gear to get going on slick roads. If I did not have a 4wd, I would have been screwed a few times.

Hi, All

I live in Idaho, and have to haul my 5th wheel over a mountain pass first thing to go anywhere. The automatic with tow/haul, combined with the exhaust brake, is awsome. I hardly ever touch the brakes on the whole journey...at most a tap to cause one more downshift in a real hairpin.

Doesn't even spill my beer. Oops.

Regards,
Larry Leach
