Big difference in price for fuel filter

Browsing Geno's website for a new fuel filter cause the stealership wants $95 bucks

Looks like Mopar and Fleetguard make a couple different filters with a big difference in price. The older style does not have a replaceable and only costs $28.95
MOPAR MOP5183410AA $28.95
MOPAR MOP5183410AA - FUEL FILTER ('07-'09, 6.7L) DODGE-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage

The newer one has a replaceable cartridge and costs MOPAR MOP68061633 $64.95
MOPAR MOP68061633 FUEL FILTER & SHELL ('07-'09, 6.7L) DODGE-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage

Funny thing is that the replacement filter element costs more than the entire older style filter and housing....what gives? Is there really any significant difference?

Dont know about the difference but Genos is lower cuz i believe they get directly from Dodge and sell so many of them they can discount.

Yes, there's a big difference. The new style filter is known as "FS2". It's a 2 stage filter, with finer filtration in the 2nd stage than what the older filter has. It's also made of a better material that filters smaller particles but still has adequate flow. I believe the filter media is called "stratopore".

Most people recommend buying a new filter with shell, then buying the replacement filter inserts. The new inserts don't fit in the old shell (not enough room). When it comes to clean fuel, you want the best filter you can get.

I wish Geno would post up some details on the new filter. Somebody posted someplace, the new filter is 5 micron vs the 7 micron we presently use. I think those are the numbers. Senior moments suck.

if you have more than one dodge dealer close by it would be worth checking prices....the dealer here in town went from 34 to 79 bucks for the fuel filter....i called another dealer and they still had them for 34 bucks....go figure

Yep I called cummins filtration directly and talked to a real nice fellow. Who spoke perfect english because he was an American BTW. He said the upgraded filter had a better filter that would filter to 5 micron. Here is copy of the email response he also sent to me. The FS43257 is a 5 micron @ 98.7% effecient. Thank you for using FleetMaster. Also the drain on the filter has been upgraded and is a lot better. The drain is actually replaceable if the seal ever fails. I hope this helps.

It has for me. I do not even have to cycle the key for it to work. The old style you would have to cycle the key the new style you just unscrew the cap and the rubber seal opens and fuel and water if any come out.

the old style filter if you unscrew drain 1.5 to 2 turns then turn key to run position so fuel pump turn on it will purge filter. The newer style seems to drain okay without this added step.

I've got 10000 miles on my truck now. When I change the fuel filter do I have to by another housing for the new filter? I heard you can't by the original filter anymore for these trucks. Is that correct? Thanks
