Heavy loads w/ 2500 diesel 6.7

I've upgraded to a larger toyhauler, (much larger) and have a question for the gear heads rather than the retired w/ a trailer crowd. I've always been amazed that it's just fine with folks if you build a 900 h.p diesel 2500, but if you speak of tricking out a 2500 to handle some heavy duty **** like towing a heavy load all these guys start quoting dodge safety specs. Basically I 'm wondering what the drivetrain differences are between a non-dually 2500 and a non-dually 3500 cummins 08 model. Are the 6-speed transmissions the same? What about final drive ratios? Please avoid the doom and gloom, as I have an excellent braking system on this new fifth wheel and just would like some advice about what I
can do to help this truck survive a 14000 lb fifth wheel.

Thanks and yes, I know this isnt the trailer section, but I'm looking for tech advice related to this model truck.

A 500lb overload leaf spring in the rear is the difference.

I was hoping to hear that, I've already dealt w/ the rear suspension, and the truck just friggin' cruises with this trailer behind it. Once the smog issues were covered, this 6.7 has turned out to be the absolute BEST work truck and most rock solid tow vehicle I've ever owned.

If you do not want to install an extra leaf a lot of guys install some air bags to help give their truck some more load control.

The airbags are o.k.--, actually a big help. I'm thinking of a 3500 "conversion" for a permanent solution. Either an add-a-leaf or a 3500 suspension via the local salvage yard.

Has anyone simply upgraded their 2500 leafs to 3500 leafs?
Do they fit?

Thanks, cyberdiesel 6.7 toyhauler-hauler

I too would like to hear from someone that has done this. Does it just bolt right up?

The leafs are the same between the 2. The only difference is the OVERLOAD springs. The little "helper springs" on top of the regular leaf pack.

Im pretty sure you need the bump stop that bolts to the side of the frame. Its what the over load spring hits. Look at any 3500 frame to see it

Yeah, that's part of the overload spring setup.

not to turn this in too a air bag vs leaf spring talk, but the air bags are nice because you can ajust them as you need to, I haul a 302 fusion toyhauler and they work very well! firestones install nice and easy dodge 2500

I have to agree with the airbags! Although mine is a 3500C/C with dual wheels, I have them and love'em! The overload will work, but cost you a little ride comfort unloaded.
