Tom's Smarty Journal
I got the Smarty yesterday. Today updated to the DR14ME software. That process was relatively painless and quick. Since my machne is Vista, it loaded the drivers automatically. Also being Vista and having 4 processors, I could keep right on with all my internet while it was updating. Next hurdle the hardware on the truck. My setup: 4" H&S Turbo to muffler delete O2 sensors connected EGT sims still installed Intake valve & cooler valve unplugged EGR plunger removed (EGR NOT blocked off) Smarty installation: Connected unit and immediately read/cleared codes TWICE. (just cuz) I then went straight into the install after the last clear. Decided to install the SW#3 default at this time. Took about 5 minutes. No clock to look at. While updating the ECM the radio clock is blank. I was sure to have the doors closed and the radio off during the update. It was interesting to see every indicator light on the dash lit up during this process. With it being exceptionally Hot here in Vegas, I took Liz for a ride to pick up some milk shakes. First impressions: Timing Rattle... OMG does that thing have timing rattle. ![]() Using my PMT Gauges I was able to see the EGT's in the ECM are being fooled by the Smarty software. Mine were locked at about 951* If the ECM were reading the EGT's it would have been 1200 for my SIMS. I can see the boost is a little subdued on the bottom part of throttle. I can see how that would help MPG's. Once I was a little up in the RPM's I could feel the torque. Very zippy. I'll take it out for a highway drive to see how things run. I want to Thank Bob Wagner for this Smarty in order to do the testing. I appreciate the opportunity. More to come tomorrow. Thanks to Andy (Onelongshot) for the following helpful info us all to use. Here is the link for the tech article. Need Help with a Smarty, Look inside Here is the link to the mads site. http://www.madselectronics.com/downl...stallation.pdf These are documents that all Smarty owners should read: Smarty REVO Settings Installation Instructions Added points from later updates: On my 1st short road trip I noticed increased trans temps from stock. About 10-20 degrees more. (N/M came back down with lower outside airtemps) Now running SW#5 w/VGT2- OMG this is a monster. Noticing Boost is very aggressive compared to previous. Also seeing boost readings or 3-4 now during Ebrake usage. SW5 w/VGT3 is very strong and controllable. Pulls great in the mid-range. Snap test on SW5 results in a big puff of smoke. (Not rolling coal) Observations so far: Simplistically speaking SW 2/3 appears to be equivilent to PMT-Tow SW 4/5 appears to be equivilent to PMT-Performance SW 6/7 appears to be equivilent to PMT-Extreme Well, Not quite. Put SW7/Default on. It appears to have a deeper stronger power than 5's quick snappy power. I notice when on the freeway w/cruise the boost is low, 2-3 psi. MY last tank was mixed driving and assorted settings and getting used to the Smarty. I still got a whopping 18.1 mpg. Pretty good for what I've been doing to this truck. I'll do my best to keep my ADD in check and stick it out for this tank with SW7. I am due to do all my fluids over this weekend and next. I don't expect that to have much effect on my results. SW#1 appears to be the Economy tune I'm looking for. More testing to come. SW#0 is a real dog. IMHO it was meant to be. Has the timing rattle like the other tunes. Uses more boost for cruising. Seems to be for use in emission test trips. That's what I'll be using for mine. n/m sw#1 just isn't cutting it for me. I'm going to run thru this tank on SW#3. Once I got used to the power and holding back, the lower levers just seem limp. VGT 4 is extremely Aggressive for the Boost & fuel Pressures. on sw3 I'm seeing boost of 10psi cruising and FP of 15 or more cruising as well. Not for the faint of heart. Added notes from my 1800 mile trip 08/09: I lasted only 50 miles before changing from SW3 up to SW5/v3 to tow my 6000 trailer. This really worked very well. Pulled some very long/large grades without any effort. My MPG for the trip ended up at a little under 14mpg. This included quite a bit of 4x4 dirt roads and some towing as fast as 70mph. Even/Odd levels: We've been discussing how things works using the even vs odd sw levels. It is curious the HP listed is the same, yet the even has stock timing. ![]() Some are testing sw4 w/ Timing2. I'm running sw2 default for awhile. Very little rattle yet still very strong. Looking to see the economy at that setting. SW5 with Timing1 is NOT a good combination. Causes surging on grades when the RP hits 20Kpsi or more. Evolution of deletes Testing: My plan is to test the following: #1 Stock exhaust w/EGR unplugged & CEL #2 Stock exhaust w/EGR unplugged Code clearing w/PMT Stock DP & stealth DPF & NOx, EGT & PS Sims. EGR unplugged w/CEL Dropped from the testing #3 Stock DP & stealth DPF & NOx, EGT & PS Sims. EGR unplugged, code clearing Stealth exhaust complete, EGT & PS Sims. EGR unplugged w/CEL Dropped from the testing Stealth exhaust complete, EGT & PS Sims. EGR unplugged code clearing Dropped from the testing #4 Stock DP & Stealth DPF/NOx, EGT & PS Sims. Smarty loaded SW5 default I'll keep track of when/if regens occur thru this run of tests. My testing Starts from the base. As of Now I"m back to stock exhaust w/ EGR unplugged & P0405 Code Date- 10/12/09 Step #1 results: Just finished 200 miles on EGR unplugged only Fuel 14.8 gal MPG calculated- 16.4MPG For the remainder of the test, THIS IS MY BASELINE MPG. Step#2 Results: 10.5 gallons = 15.9 mpg. I would call that about a wash on the code clearing w/ egr unplugged only (no DPF delete) The regen was very painful again. Lightning bolt and a P0106 MAP code. The regen occurred at only 125 miles this time. Interesting. IMHO The Butterfly gear must stay in unless there is a DPF delete & code clearing. Step#3 Results: #3 Stock DP & stealth DPF & NOx, EGT & PS Sims. EGR unplugged, code clearing 11/11/09 421miles/23.5 gallons= 17.91

I wanted to be the first to say in your thread dad I definately am subscribed. I think this ( if we can keep on topic) will be a very informative post that should probably end up a tech sticky. Try and get us some of the HP info to as well as mileage. I think Marco and bob made a smart call.

Mine doesn't have a smarty, but it seems to shut down real hard too. I should have my junior Monday I ordered it from bob Thursday. I'll comment back then. Sorry for jacking a mod's thread, but I share a symptom and i am curious as to the cause. I drove big diesels and some of them did this. But my 05 duramax did not?

Oh, one more thing. Both of you have manual transmissions. Hold your clutch in when you shut it down. That will calm the shaking a little bit. The aluminum casing of the G56 transmission tends to amplify the shutdown shimmy. Disengaging the clutch removes the transmission from the equation. Tom, good thread so far. Look forward to seeing your continued impressions and data logs.

I want to also subscribe and see the results as well........I have put the 14me on mine this past week and seems like with mine with the EB on there is lots of whine which is normal but it seems like I also get it under a slight acceleration as well.......I mean I can give it a little throttle and the noise is their off and on almost like a boost leak.
