The "How too" in silencer ring removal

Ok so I took my chances on taking out the silencer ring on my truck. This was one heck of a project to do. Here are some pix and videos of the before and after.

DSCN0485.jpg - Image - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

DSCN0487.jpg - Image - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Not know that the turbo did not have to come off I started taking the water and oil lines off the turbo, Thats when one of the guys there said, "Why cant we take the compressor housing off?" Wich we did and was very easy to do. And this housing was easy to put back on because there is an aliment pin on the turbo and the housing.

DSCN0489.jpg - Image - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is when the fun begins, I tried to drill out the pins, now these pins are harden steel and are not fun to get out of aluminum. 3 hour's later and 4 broken drill bit we gut the ring out of the housing.

Here are some of the videos of this before and after.

DSCN0477.flv - Video - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This is after the ring has been removed.

Now after the ring was removed I did NOT notes any drop in boost. if any thing the turbo spools quicker and holds it pick long.

There have been a few guys that have dyno'd them before and after same day. Average 25 to 40 HP lost.

I can't even remember what forum I saw it on. I just looked and couldn't find it but there were three different guys that posted up their dyno sheets. The third guy argued up and down the first two HAD to be wrong because his buddy removed his thought and he got more power. To prove his point he went to a dyno and did a before and after. He was eating crow when he got done

Just buy a POS turbo off ebay and change out the comp housing after you remove it off the bought one. That way you always have one to put back on, if you get tired of the sound.

It's interesting about the dynos showing power loss after whistle plate removal on the 6.7s.

Still, according to Cummins, the whistle plate is only for noise reduction. Granted, they probably didn't dyno the motor with it removed.

Here is the response from Cummins when I asked them, a few weeks ago, about removing the whistle plate from my 6.7:

Good afternoon sir,

Sorry for the late reply. It will not affect performance at all. All it will do is increase the noise.

Best regards
Rob
