Taillight swap?

So I sold my 2000 CTD last week and bought a new 08...
I have to say it has some Fugly taillights on it!

Today I saw an older Gen III with normal smooth taillights on it. They looked like they were the same shape and size, just without the two big round protrusions on them.

That got me thinking, "could I swap my fugly lights for an older set?"

What do you think?
Has anyone already done it?

It's not a straight swap. It's been covered here or on another site; I can't keep up. I hated the new ones too at first but then when I tell people I want to change them out they say they like them! Go figure. But they've grow on me as time goes on.

And besides I thought why spend money and jack with the wires to make my truck look like an older model? Kinda makes no sense when you get down to it.

I thought the same thing when I got mine! I got a set of 04 tail lights from a friend of mine for nothing cause he put a flat bed on and started the swap.
The plug ins for all the lights are different. The older pickups used a inline like system with one set of wires coming in then split off to the tail, brake, turn and backup. The 07 uses a twist lock system like the headlights. It could be done if you wanted to cut and splice all the wires together. Seemed like a pain to me, so Ive just gotten used to those fugly alien looking tail lights!

I got a pair of Recon LED taillights that are for like 03-07 for my 08 and they don't hook up. The LED's have 1 connector like the 07's I think and my truck has 2 connectors. I am waiting for an email back from Recon on how to wire them up. I'll let you know what they tell me.

This is what Recon sent me. It seems a little involved but not too hard.

easy

recon LED's are pretty easy to install, invest in a set of nice OEM electrical connectors. I got mine thgough a buddy who works at a local Suzuki motorcycle shop, two stage crimpable connectors with rubber waterproof covers, this specific set came with the special crimping tool. basically follow RECON's email wiring diagram and start splicing and crimping. RECON's lights come with two keeper pegs already installed on the lights, but before you have to fight it, swap them out for the Dodge OEM pegs, and dont be afraid to epoxy them in. You'll understand why when you want to get the lights out of the body at a later time. Wiring is pretty critical, wired wrong the lights will do weird things like flash too fast and have the wrong sections lit up at the wrong times. Yes I had to swap some wires around. in the end, the lights turned out bright and working.
