It finally happened...Forced regen while sitting still.

It finally happened, yesterday. It has been cold, I have been moving my truck 44.9 feet every 7 minutes. (I am on a pipeline.) The truck was in low range and idled all day. After about three hours of idling for 7 minutes and then driving 44.9 feet, I saw on the overhead display that there was an "Exhaust system" problem. It said that it was 80% full and recommended a regeneration. Then it got to 90% and I started to get nervous.

I set the high idle feature, and set the RPM's to 2000. A regen initiated while it was sitting. The overhead said "regen in process." After another 7 minutes, the percentage dropped to 80% then another 10 minutes to 70%. For the rest of the day, I was able to balance the percentage with certain times of high idle at 2000 rpm.

At the end of work the percent meter said 70%. I dropped my helper off and got on the freeway headed to the house. After 12 minutes on the freeway at 63 mph, the overhead said "regen complete."

This morning the truck ran really strong. After some more idle and drive 44.9 feet, I thought that if I set the idle at 1000 rpm's that it wouldn't clog up again. Instead it blew a really light colored smoke. I don't know if it was white or grey. But it was obvious, and made people comment.

What is the smoke? Does anybody know? I can't survive a winter if my truck isn't running.

All comments are appreciated.

like he said, crawling 44.9 ft every 7 minutes on the job. not a good task for a 6.7 wthout dpf/egr delete. would be a choice mod for your truck/job !!!

I think that it is harder on the truck to start it and shut it down every 7 minutes. Having the heat on makes it nice, too. I have been working in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. There was recently 15 inches of snow. I am now in Indiana. It has been as low as the high 20's, and warming up to the low 40's.

I was surprised to learn that by setting the RPM's to 2000, I could lower the percentage on the overhead display. After reading the arguments, on other posts, about how the overhead wouldn't show that a regen was happening, I was surprised to see "Regen in Process."

I have been tempted to do the "Potentiometer thing." But I don't want to be constantly messing with them. I have heard of the Gen I boxes, which I am guessing are just a few resistors in a box. What is the newest one that has something to do with the pressure sensors?

Thanks for all of your replies...... Rhyno

It don't matter why he is running the truck all day. Thats not the question. If you were a Pipeliner, then you would know that there is a many of people who sit in there truck all day a watch and supervise or get out and work and move on to the next joint of pipe....Its part of the job...

Now back to the question...I agree with the rest of them. Get the delete kit. It's goin to mess up your warranty, but you for sure won't have problems with that if its gone. I know a few inspectors on my job, that I have told about the delete kits for their trucks.

It's good to hear from a fellow Pipeliner!

Does anyone know what the smoke is?

Hmm, what is the white smoke?

If I had to guess, I would say it's the same thing that most of our trucks do when we first install the Delete kit.
I would venture an edcucated guess and say, it is a result of the forced regen.
When we first put on the delete kit's most of us see white smoke for a few miles or so. I beleive it is the computer ECM learning. Now, why yours did it is a good question.

You might have maybee cracked the DPF during the regen, they get HOT. very hot. maybee with the snow, it was just too many quick temp changes for it to handle and it cracked. that is my guess.

anyone? bueler? anyone?

I think its normal, i wish i could tell you why. But my truck used to blow out smoke like that every once in awhile before my deletes, i recommend just following through with all the deletes and youll be set.

isnt it sad that is has come to this. a real working person (man or woman) has to deal with this crap bc they bought a real truck tough enough to do the job they need done and it cant even run all day without this regen/pluged DPF crap. not to mention the MPG loss.

augh gees

I explained to a Cummins Tech about what happened and asked him what the smoke could be. He told me that it (the light colored smoke) was ash. ASH?! I must have got it pretty plugged up.
