4500 Fuel Mileage Testing

Well after a long and trying time to get the 4500 6.7 fuel mileage maximum attained I have about 7000 miles of playing with the MP8, speeds, headwinds and all the other variances here are the results as the pictures show. The main reason for this testing is that I read all these section on the 6.7 bad fuel economy, and just wanted to see what the best I could get out of this new motor with the emissions.
So here was the test: 2008 4500 6.7 auto with a 4.88 gear and scale weight on the truck 13,600 lbs. The only performance enhancer is a MP-8.

Here is what I have determined to be the best combination for my truck;
I have completed 1450 miles this week with a 70/30 highway to city ratio for the test, in the mornings I always had a southeast wind at 10-15 mph and the economy would rise about .5 mpg, but would lose .5 mpg coming into the head wind, so that was a wash. The truck loves 1900 rpms, with a travel speed of 64 mph, and after two weeks of playing with the mp-8 and its setting, was determined that 75-80 percent on the mp-8 dial the truck constantly gave a 19.6 hand calculated mpg and 21.3 overhead reading.

This setting on the mp-8 have not caused a single df burn off in the past 4500 miles so its hard to determine how this will effect the overall mileage of the truck. I fact since new the df has not burned off once to drop the fuel economy.

I will keep on with the mileage and not reset the overhead until the end of the year as that way I can get a more realistic average after pulling my enclosed trailer and other driving conditions.

Thank the good lord for that. Your're one of the very few lucky ones to be getting that high of mileage especially with low miles and heavy weight. What formula did you use to calculate the mileage? I am curious.

Thanks,

Darrell

HotShotTX, here is how I hand calculated the mileage for the most accurate way I could think of.
I am finishing up a Sunoco station and the pumps needed to be calibrated, so I took the 5 gallon calibration can after the pump was calibrated and added 5 gallons at a time into the truck, the first fill up this week was on Sunday and the truck took 40 gallons to get close to the full mark, then again on Wednesday I added another 34 gallons with the calibration can. I drove all week until this morning and the total mileage was 1449.4, so from putting in the 74 gallons it worked out this way.

1449.4 divided by 74 (calibrated) = 19.586 or 19.6

For the people who have never seen or heard of a calibration can it is a certified can by the State of Florida to enable the pump to be set to the exact gallons vs. price per gallon all pumps must be calibrated once in the calendar year to make sure the stations are not giving you 4.8 gallons when you are paying for 5 gallons.

Here is how I hand calculate my mpg for the most accurate reading.

1. Fill up
2. Record starting odometer mileage
3. Run tank to almost empty then fill up.
4. Subtract current odometer mileage from starting mileage
5. Divide total miles by total gallons filled up.

Keeps it simple and accurate. There are many different formulas but I find this to be the most accurate.

Also, I did not mention earlier as soon as the truck had the utility box on the truck the 31 foot enclosed car hauler was hooked to the truck so it was working hard with about 100 miles on it. When we did this the truck was not loaded in the bins, but in Taverner, FL we went though the dot station 200 lbs under the 26,000 lbs, so I think that may have had something too do with the fuel economy, as it has worked hard from service date.
