I have thought about getting me a 5500 6pd, but I am getting 21 mpg empty on the highway with my 05 Dodge. Loaded I get around 10-12 pulling a 45ft flatbed mini float. I don't have a programmer anymore and all stock except for CAT delete.

I have driven the 4500 & 5500 without a bed on them. How smooth is the drive with your service bed from a scale of 1-10? 1 being poor and 10 being excellent.

9 with the bed and tools, with just the c&c 3 it will beat your kidney's to death. I really like the truck except the steering its a little touchy and likes to wander if you keep correcting the steering(my 2500 does the same thing), I and my employees have learned to let the truck go were it wants in the lane.
I think that I will get rid of my 2500 4x4 sport and get a 4500 with a bed conversion, I am waiting until the speed limiter is corrected. I am going to remedy the weight problem by adding a 500-800 gallon custom flat tank in the truck bed.

Hello, just bought a 2008 6.7 ltr, love the truck 3500 dually with a full 8' bed, single cab. Love my truck hate the mileage, so anything I can do to improve it I am interested in, totally stupid on what to do but I am a diesel mechanic by trade. What do you recommend that would improve my mileage as someday I will be pulling a 5th wheel. John

Well one thing people seem to forget is that diesel engines seem to require more of a "break in" period then a gasser. Most people report an increase in fuel economy anywhere from 10k to 30k miles in.:thumbsup

Yea I agree on that. When I bought my truck I was selling alot of hay and I was hauling most of it. I didnt unhook from that gooseneck for 3months. I think thats what helped my truck the best.

It appears that hotshottx method are much more accurate than mrfloridas. The calibration can method leaves to much guess work because your not totally filling the tank. The hotshot way will be accurate every time. My 5.9 2006 with no mod will not average as good of fuel mileage as the claims of that 4500. And I hand calculate EVERY time I fill up. The overhead console is never correct.

I did the mileage also hotshottx way and they are very close to one another, but for the bad news, my economy started going down while working in Erie Pa. the truck had to go to the dealer in Orlando before the holiday's because of the injectors. I lost the injectors on the 4500 and my 2500. The injectors went bad on the 4500 @ 15,000 and 18,000 on the 2500, these trucks have the mp-8 and were run most of the time under 50%, so watch that pressure guys, because as you see in another post they are not cheap like the 5.9's.

I find it really hard to believe that a truck with 4.88 gears would be anything close to that figure!

Mine is a 3500 C/C with a 9'4" hauler bed, the truck is right around 8800lbs empty and hand figured before the XRT I would get almost 13 driving right. After the XRT I am getting just over 17 driving right unloaded with 4.10 gears!

But I also do my figures based ONLY on complete fill ups, no part fill ups.
I also checked with a local wrecker service that has a regular cab 4500 with 4.44's and he drives like my grandmother and also has the XRT stuff and he is only getting 15mpg on the hwy with cruise set on 68!

Thumbs up

Wow, that is REALLY good mileage! Even with all the stuff I have done to mine I average 15.5 mpg. Now, if I could slow down on the interstate and do 65 mph instead of 75 mph I know that will put me closer to 17 mpg but thats not gonna happen......
