True. And from what I've found, it seems to be the biggest difference between the Cummins and Duramax and Powestroke. Just talking about the motor here, it seems as if a lot more money has to be put into the Duramax once a certain horsepower mark is reached- i.e. heads, pistons, crankshaft, etc. to handle it.

Again, not impossible, just expensive. I'm sure you know more about what it takes to make a Duramax handle high boost than I do. I'm just pointing it out that's the biggest difference I see when adding tons of horsepower. The Cummins motor requires less 'bulletproofing' when running high horsepower and boost.

Ya thats very true but we can get to a certain hp number with less money. Cause of the big power tuners, and EFI live.

Is that magic number 600? I think I read that somewhere on the Duramax forum, by the guy competing in the Diesel Power Mag challenge. He was saying with a good tune, you can hit 600 rwhp, but after that, serious motor work is needed.

I'd love to see the cost comparison between a Duramax and Cummins on hitting 600 rwhp - and then the cost difference in hitting 800 and a 1,000.

Ya, i just meant we can do a 425hp tuner, which is around 360 at the wheels for $950. Then the fueling and trans mods. But they dont make tuners that hot for cummins.

This reminds me of the old Camaro vs Mustang argument. I used to have a 2002 SS and I remember talking with guys who had 2003-2004 Mustang Cobras. Sure, I could add an STS turbo or supercharger to my LS1, but the block couldn't handle it. Whereas a Cobra could hone the supercharger, change the belts, and run massive amounts of boost and the block could handle it. My parts were cheaper to a point, but there block could handle (and make) more power.

wow this sure did become a big pissing contest didnt it. you know i dont care if he puts his tuner on a higher level, cause i will do the same. this is my kill and if he wants to race again i certinly take him on again. you can have all the horsepower in the world but if you cant control it from the drivers seat it doesnt mean $#!+. CO6.7 your right those Duracraps are need some attention to other vital parts when you start adding more power to them, ie: they couldnt handle boosted 4wd launches with out upgrading their steering and tie-rods. and that is nessesary with extra power. now lets get back on topic of me beating a more modded truck than mine.

thanx to the dodge guys that understand

Maybe Meyer can shed some light on this, but I've always wondered how an aluminum piston can handle the force, heat, etc. exterted on it when running high boost. Is it a common upgrade when modifying a D-max? They do have iron blocks?

Your cummins also has aluminum pistons, same as a DMAX. Only the heads on a DMAX are Aluminum

I think the 6.7 has steel pistons.
