My truck is in the shop again!

I took my truck in on friday to Chapman Dodge. They read the codes and told me they did not have a diesel mechanic available to do any work so I picked the truck up after lunch. I have to remeber to ask if they have diesel mechanic available before I take the truck in. You would think that when a guy with a diesel calls in to schedule an appointment they would check for the avaialbility of the appropriate mechanic. Ugh!!

My truck went back in yesterday. I am now driving a Chrysler Sebring. I am glad that I did not buy one of these "pos." When I dropped the truck off I told them I needed the truck back by Friday because I was planning to goto TX and pick up a trailer. They called me before lunch to tell me that they were waiting on parts to be delivered and that they would not be done until Friday.

The problem. I noticed that valve on the passenger side of the EGR system had soot all over it. The service manager told me that was the reason the CEL was on.

zigfreed: Its sounds like the same problem I had a couple of weeks ago when they replaced my turbo, and cleaned out the EGR. They found a crack in the cooler bypass assembly. What codes is your truck showing? Mine showed a p2262 code.

I am not sure what code is showing. I will let you know when I get the truck back.

Do what I did the last time I called - ask if the competent diesel mechanic will available when you take the truck in - I remember the service guy going 'hmmmmmm competent...."

Hey Zig, I remember seeing at my dealer in Phoenix that the diesel department was going to be closed last week so they could attend a conference on the "Sprinter" vans. The diesel tech there rescheduled though because they were offering a class at another time.

I was also shocked to think there would be nobody in the diesel department for a week. I know that doesn't fly where I work...

This happened to me. The second time I had the CEL, I took it to a dealer near me; they took the vehicle in, checked it out and told me it needs to be taken to another dealer because they don't have a diesel technician on board. I thought that was crazy. Why would they take the truck in if they don't have a diesel tech? I guess all in all it was fine as I took it to another dealer and now I am a regular visitor at the second dealer (for CEL of course...)...

Even the 'competent', cummins certified diesel mechanics sometimes look at working on the 6.7 as pretty much the same as working on an alien flying saucer that they don't have the manual to. But for sure you need to ask the dealer you're going to if they have a cummins certified tech. The days when the smartest guy in the shop can wing it without the proper training are over. Honestly, given that this truck is pretty much the flagship vehicle that Chrysler sells, I think they shouldn't give a 5 star rating unless the place has a cummins certified tech.
