Oil Change Question

I've had my truck for about 6 weeks and put 2,000 miles on it. Yesterday, the information center beeps telling me I need to get the oil changed.

Now, I don't mind doing the first one with only 2,000 miles since it's so new. But what are the rest of you guys seeing as far as oil change intervals?

The owner's manual lists 6 months or 7,500 mile intervals - whichever comes first. I haven't towed anything, haven't been hotrodding it, so I don't know why the oil would break down so fast.

Is it the EGR system that breaks it down faster?

I had my first oil change at ~3000mi because of the overhead saying it needed changing. Dealer said that it needed to be changed, really black and sooty. At that time I was not running my EB all the time and had 5 CEL's. After I started running my EB all the time I haven't had any CEL's (knock on wood) and have not seen the over head say anything about an oil change needed. I have over 6K on her now and no message for the oil change. I think it has to do with the driving style. if you mostly drive in-town i recommend the EB all the time. if you run in-town the EGR runs more because the ECM wants to do a regen, thus polluting the oil which trips the sensors for the oil change sooner. running the EB will keep your EGT's up which i believe has helped my situation. This is my first Diesel so there is a bit of a learning curve but, and even more to learn with these 6.7's. Good luck to you.

like willis said...."driving style" has a lot to do with it...and plus you gotta remember that that horrible piece of crap known as the EGR is pumping black soot into your engine which will make you engine oil as black as night.

Right on Rovell. Hit the nail on the head with the EGR bit.

EGR is the DEVIL! Get rid of it, get rid of your problems.

I have a 07.5 , 6 speed auto and the overhead first gave me the oil change required message at 5100 miles. I had driven almost all highway miles at 65+ so the dealer said to go ahead and change it as it was the First oil change.
The overhead just gave me the oil change required again at 7200 miles odometer reading. again almost all highway miles. I checked the oil and it is thin and black. I took it to my dealership and the service manager said that there was no way it should need an oil change so soon. He said it was bull S and if the sensor was so good at determining the needs of the motor in terms of oil then just reset the message and run it to the proper mileage before changing it unless another message came up. ( And if the oil does really need changing then the sensor should activate another message.) He said if he was wrong then the 5 year warranty could look after it.
By the way I had a Turbo replaced at 5600 miles.

yup thats what it does. The manual says 7500 mi i think, but they have the "monitor" in the truck tell you to change it every 3k miles or less usually. I would do the first change when it comes on then just go to the intervals in the manual.

while i dont have the manual handy...im not all that keen on forking out the cash to have the dealer change it when I can damn sure drain a pan and swap a filter.

how does one reset that message so I dont have to look at it after doing the oil change?

turn the key on the press the fuel pedal down and hold for 3 seconds and it should reset. I do it a couple of times just to make sure it reset.

Nick03 was close, but incorect.
Turn the key to run position, press the go pedal down three times, it will reset, and then turn to the off position. I belive the three pedal presses needs to be done within five seconds.
